Raleigh four-digit serial numbers?

I have been searching this question for DAYS! I've tried old roads, and every other site I have seen anyone suggest for this information... including many great leads from right here in this forum! So! Long/short? It's your turn!!!

What gives with the FOUR digit Raleigh s.n.s? And why have I rarely even seen this mentioned?

I have a Record that I am guessing is very early to mid seventies. The ONLY number I can find on it is on the underside of the crank. Four digits very clear, and what may, or may not, be a vague x underneath the number, but not neatly placed.

This is a Nottingham bike, in what I believe was called "school bus yellow." I'm not sure that is the exact color, but the description certainly fits!!

Any help out there? I'm boggled!!

Do you have a photograph of your Record and the complete serial #? Would like to add it to the serial records I have here just in case it helps uncover any of the serial systems.

The only other place it just might have a serial number on would be the seatlug which I have photographed on the Headbadge site. The serial might be completely or mostly obscured under paint, however - takes some good lighting to see it.

Kurt-
I will try to get to that in the next couple of days!!!

I found The Headbadge site thanks to one of your posts here. Thank you!!!

From what you know, might there be a chance that the vague "x" I described was something designating frames for export?
It appears to have been stamped, but that may just be about how much original paint it was applied over it?

The four digits, on the other hand, look to have been "cut" very deeply, and right THROUGH the paint. I will see if I can get all that to show in a pic...
