Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

It is if you think it is. if not, then no......it's up to you. A Vintage bike is worth only what the buyer is willing to pay.

Would be nice if there was more information about the components.

Not to mention the all-important drive-side photo, if the seller feels reluctant to talk about the components.

She says the bike is rust free and new tires were just put on them that are worth about 50ish dollars. Is still a good deal at $200?

If it is worth it to you at that price, yes.

It's an aluminum frame, so it won't rust. If it's your size, and it's in very good condition, $200-$300 is about the going rate for those Cannondales. If it's what you want, go for it. Of course, it never hurts to negotiate the price down!

EDIT: Recommends a brake adjustment? Possibly, or the wheels are out of true. That could cost $20 a wheel to fix at an LBS...work that into your negotiations.

EDIT: Oh, I thought $200 was the asking price. If it's a little rough, I might start at $100 and work my way up. If it's in very good condition, maybe start at $150 and do the same.

When people put these ads up on CL, do they really think 1989 is vintage? I mean its barely 20 years old.

I only take exception because that makes me feel old

For a Cannondale...it's pretty vintage.

To most bike stores, it IS vintage. I found that out when getting a chain put on my Trek. "Seven-speed? We'd have to order that."

Sounds as if your shop isn't smart enough to realize that Shimano 7-speed is the same as Shimano 8-speed (which is still in reasonably common use).

Good point. I keep forgetting how poor many, probably most shops are when it comes to servicing vintage bikes. I found a real winning shop here in central NC. When I asked my LBS for a freewheel for an old roadie they responded, "you want a 5 speed or a 6 speed".
I'm spoiled.

Based on others I talked to, they knew, they just didn't want to do the work. They have a bit of a reputation for that. The other place I took it to said "sure, no problem. Nothing special about that."

Which shop? It'd be nice to know a friendly place if I get myself into trouble.

All Star Bikes. I frequent the Cary shop on Maynard Rd, but the Raleigh shops, especially the Quail Ridge shop, are vintage freindly as well. IMHO all three have an excellent rep for repairs at reasonable prices.

Is that the one across from the Volvo dealer? If so, they did my chain for me.

the post was deleted - did you buy the bike? what model was it? anyone care to enlighten me....please. I'm asking because I just bought my wife an '87 SR500. I wasn't thinking of it as "vintage" though......just not new, somewhat interesting in its historical placement in bike design evolution, not a lot of money & basically needing nothing but a little adjusting, cleaning & fitting.

i ended up getting the bike for 200. she wasnt going to negociate it down since shes had so many email about it. So i was just like what the hell. Its pretty hard to find a used bike my size in the tampa bay area. Here are the pictures. It comes with the Shimano 105 group set and new tires. Also she added some crankbrothers pedals. The paint is chipped in some places btw. It rides nice though.

did i get a decent deal or ripped off?

It looks ok. Wow, lots of paint chips. Go to the local auto parts store and get some bright red touch up paint and have at it. That particular red is easy to match. Just give it a good washing before you start. It'll look sharp once you're finished.

Here's one of the same vintage in the same "red" color. It had a bunch of paint chips too but the auto touch paint did the trick. Have a look:

Nice, I'll have to add pics of our Cannondale. It's white with what looks like pink (maybe it faded?) lettering & cable sheathing. That works out perfectly for my wife. Oh, and a frame probably one size smaller. I felt the same way about finding a decent bike that fit. I just picked up some new brake cables & I have new bar tape & a cage. I've been looking into changing the gearing a bit https://www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-mechanics/448172-shimano-105-biospace-era-upgrade-question.html

still not sure what I'll end up with WRT gears. Here in the rolling terrain of east TN, that matters more than in Florida.

With new tires, especially, sounds fair!
