brifters with old campy

sorry if this has been asked before.

i'm building a new carbon pino and am waiting until fall for the new 11 speed campy.

until then i am still training with my 84 pino which people love. but of course it has downtube shifters.

has anyone used newer brifters like campy chorus with their old derailleurs? (super record)
i want the convenience of index shifting without having the buy new derailleurs just for a few months.
yes i will need a new cassette and chain

just wondering if anyone has had success with this setup.

TIA

Will not work.

Not a chance. Totally different geometry in the rear. The front might work since it is not technically indexed. Then again, if you're already considering a new cassette and chain to go with the Chorus Ergo levers, just throw in a used 10-speed Veloce rear derailleur and cables and you should be ok. I'm sure they are cheap on eBay. Do you have a wheel that takes cassettes? I would have expected a freewheel on that bike which would present a whole 'nother set of problems.

Frank Berto says maybe in the book I was reading today. You never know. I read that somebody used to set up Simplex SX610's with Shimano six speed shifters and freewheels. The SX610 was friction only, but it had a barrel adjuster. The Super Record derailer would need a barrel adjuster, but I understand that there was one that could be added on to derailers that didn't have them when using Synchro shifters.

Hmmm...I'd like to see that. A barrel adjuster is built into the cable stops that fit on the shifter bosses on recent Campagnolo systems so that would not be a problem. But what combination might work? 8-9-10-(11) speed Ergos - 5-6-7 speed freewheels? 8-9-10-(11) speed cassettes? NR/SR? Maybe if you mixed and matched enough pieces? Or would you need so weird combination like a 9-speed casette with 2 cogs removed? All I can say is hmmm... ;)

What's Frank say? I've been waiting for the 3rd edition of 'The Dancing Chain' but apparently its publication has been delayed.

Sounds as if someone needs to sit around with a Uniglide hub, seven or eight cogs, and a box of assorted 7, 8 and 9-speed spacers. Don't forget the Shimano Centeron pulley wheel either.

I've got one machine in the works here with a pair of D/A 8-speed barcons and an SR RD on it - might be time for a bit of experimenting when I get around to it. Didn't care for the idea of running a Shimano RD on it either...

If anybody is looking for Berto's "Complete Guide to Upgrading Your Bike", Amazon has several copies under $10 right now. I know the last time someone posted about the book here, there was a crazy run-up in prices for a while.

At one point I thought about checking it out from the local library and just paying the lost book fee to keep it, but I figured the karma would catch up with me. Instead, I bought one from Amazon for under $6 shipped & can enjoy it guilt-free.

+1 - no C&V'er should be without this book if they fool around with mid '80s components.

Yeah, and one of those derailleur testing setups like Frank had. And nothing better to do
