You could try to find a model matching the color in the pre-1982 catalogs on vintage-trek.com. I'm fairly sure it's not later than '81, because of the seat tube logo, and the apparent "wrong-sided" brakes, which may be Shimano 600 Arabesque, or older Dia-Compes. I hope you're fairly long-legged -- it's a large-ish frame, 24" at least.

*Edit* I double checked and it was '79 when they when from the screw-on to the stick-on head badge. So that with other info that Charles pointed out would make it a '79-81 vintage. The Rigida rims and Avocet saddle were used on most all of their lineup in that timespan as well.

the parts spec on the 412, 613, and 614 are nearly identical, and this bike is very true to the catalog. I'd wager that you'll find the original tires on it. The major difference is that the 412 is built with Ishiwata tubing and the 6 series is built with 531 tubing. Not a great deal of difference, actually, although 531 will have a greater resale potential. In practice, it takes a pretty refined butt to tell the difference, and the weight will be nearly the same. Could be a 1980 or a 1981...you'll have to get a serial number to say for sure. Again, back then, the year difference doesn't make a great deal of difference to the bike itself. They used the same spec and frame from year to year.

Assuming you paid $50.50. That's outstanding for that bike. Around here, a 412 will sell for around $150 to $200. So I think you did outstanding. Old steel Trek road bikes are sought after.

The serial number is on the bottom bracket, sometimes buried under a cable guide. If you can share it, we (and you) can look it up on www.vintage-trek.com and see where it fell in the reconstructed Trek build schedule. Then you can look in the brochure for the appropriate year and find equipment, colors, and some frame geometry. That's about as good a data source as you're gonna find, even though it is said not to be 100%.

I believe the Ishawata frame material will be the determining factor. I've had two just like this - dark blue -- with that TREK decal design, both Ishawata 022 (material label should be just under the seat on seat tube). I believe they are 400 series from that time (412?). Nice old bikes. I got one for $25 from local exchange, and the other was a donation.
$50 would be a good price for a classic Trek.

It isd a good deal, but I just have to say something...

Goodwill needs to get over themselves and get rid of that watermark.

I can't say you're wrong for this bike, but I know in the early '80s 6xx's it's really necessary to go by serial number to know what bike you have. Trek made a lot of changes in those frames from year to year.

got the bike earlier today.

serial: M4F6A48

making it a 1980 (?) 412

it did have original tires but they were extremely rotter, the brake lever hoods were very gross as well.

i do have long legs being 6'2'' so it fits quite well

im super excited about it and once i get the rear wheel trued up it will become my commuter/rider (and i will sell my nishiki and my centurion)
