What the... 700c tire on a 27in rim?!

SO my friend gave me a craigslist bike to do some minor repairs and tune up for him on, including changing the tires. I happily obliged him, but thought that he probably should have been able to change the tires on his own. He told me he couldn't figure out how to do it, so i assumed he was just not using enough force. I took the bike home and when I attempted to remove the orignal tire, I found that the original owner of the bike (who sold it on craigslist) had somehow managed to stretch a 700c tire a full half inch more than allowed by the laws of physics onto a 27in rim!

It still boggles my mind how someone could manage to stretch a metal bead this far, and I had to use a dremel tool to cut the tire off. I am convinced that the tire was built onto the rim, as there is no other possible explanation for this. Does anyone know of a superhuman strong enough to install this tire?

I don't know who put that tire on that rim, I just know I don't want to meet him in a dark alley when he's mad.

Once upon a time I put a 26 x 1 3/8" (EA3) (590mm bead diameter) on a Schwinn S-6 rim (597mm bead diameter). It took a motorcycle tire lever to get it on, but I pinched the tube in the process and took it to the bike shop to get it fixed. The mechanic used snips to take it off, explained what I'd done wrong, and got me rolling again.

After many more visits to that bike shop, he got tired of me hanging around and hired me. That's how I got started in the bicycle business.

Someone forgot to tell the installer it couldn't be done, and likely with a solid set of screwdrivers, it got done.
I can't be the only one out there who used screwdrivers as tire levers, bent the round ones, and stole my dad's good ones to use.

Just like Lance couldn't come back from cancer win the Tour, Lindbergh couldn't make it across the Atlantic, the Army couldn't hold through the French winter, Seabees couldn't build Subic Bay, and Apollo 13 should have been a space coffin.....

Now, if we can just get Michael Phelps on a bike....

Then again, next time you see an Osprey, take cover.
