Correct Wheel/Tire for Univega.

If T-Mar or any other expert is out there please reply. I've been using some vintage Araya 700C wheels with Vrederstein 700X23 tires on my Univega Super Strada. Works fine. When I got the bike from my son-in-law, it came with Araya 27" wheels and worn-out tires. When using Nashbar, Continental etc tires from 1.25 to 1.125" the fit is really tight; maybe 2-3mm clearance between the brake caliplers and tire. So my question is, which size wheel/tire did this bike originally come with? If anyone's got a copy of a catalogue I'd greatly appreciate it also. Thx again, PG.
