Is this Fuji worth a repaint?
I was given this old Fuji by an ex-roommate. It's spray-painted pink, and has no original components.
I know this: it's lugged steel; forged dropouts; the headbadge is the metal riveted kind, but the longer, stretched out version, and does not say "Made in Japan"; the serial # on the bottom bracket is F9033516 Little details: It has rack/fender mounts on the dropouts, and one of those little knobs inside the seat stays that you can hang your chain on. I ride it as a single speed (though it has braze ons for downtube shifters), and won an alley cat race on it here in SF, for which I won a very nice repaint by Chester Cycles, and I'm wondering, is this the bike I should have repainted? It's ugly, but I like the ride; however, if it's junk, I'll have something else repainted. Thanks so much for any help! I can post pics if necessary. (Also: I don't know if this helps ID it, but it seems to have a high bb clearance. About an inch and a half higher than the Gios road frame and the Surly fixie in the house, though they are all within a centimeter of eachother in size.) |
If you like the ride, and the respray is free - why not?
A fuji with braze on shifter mounts is likely at least a mid-level frame. Does it have a braze-on derailleur hanger (or did it at least have one once upon a time?) |
Any Fuji is worth a repaint, IMO ;)

Between the brazeons and the hi logo headbadge, it probably was/is one of the higher end models.
I know for some years in the early 80's, the hi logo went from the top of the line down to S-12-S. But I don't think they ever made a S-12-S with brazeons. If there is a dropout adjuster in the rear, not only should you have it repainted, you should be assured that you got one of the high end fujis. If you search for the "fuji database" thread, you can calculate what year your frame purports to be, which goes a long way in narrowing down the remaining detective work to figuring out what it is. |
Thank you all for your help--I really appreciate it!
Robatsu: by dropout adjusters, do you mean those little screws with springs, which screw into the end of the dropouts? I had those, and took them off. Come to think of it, it is a pretty light ride for its age ... |
Well, put 'em back on fella!

I have some nice hips for a fella. ;)
Did I get the "dropout adjusters" trivia right? |
