How old is this JC Higgens?
1 Attachment(s)
I am currently restoring this 24 inch (wheel size) JC Higgens. Photo is the "Before" shot, except I had already started cleaning up the chrome bits.
Under the bottom bracket are these numbers: MUU 502 46030 313981 Anyone know how old it is? Or a link to a Higgens serial number database? Thanks! Harv . |
Early to mid 1960s. The name J. C. Higgins disappeared about 1965. Roger

Are J.C. Higgins worth anything? I saw one in fair shape at the flea market last weekend.

0 to 50 dollars unless it is something special that you want for yourself. They were made by Murray for Sears. Roger

It was nothing special, a run of the mill coaster brake. If any of our South Florida members are interested I saw it at the Swap Shop on Sunrise Blvd. last Saturday. Jim |
It's worth a bit more if the chrome is good.
Some of those early tire sizes are kinda hard to find. Not impossible but they'll be $50 a pair off ebay instead of $20 a pair at the hardwware store. AsI recall (check me on this) modern bikes have a decimal size, like 24x1.75 or 24x1.5. Those are evrywhere cheap. Fractional sizes like 24x1 3/4 or 24x1 1/2 are special order. Schwinn sizes like s-2 0r s-7 are also special order. |
Also Ladies bikes tend to be worth less because they take better care of their bikes than we do and they don't get rare.
on the other hand I always liked that model because it looks like a mixte in 50's drag. |
When I was a kid, a neighbor "pulled me over" on his J.C. Higgins to give me a ticket for speeding on my bicycle.
Said J.C. stood for "Junior Cop." I thought it was a brand for Penney's, not Sears, but maybe I've got my J.C.'s confused. |
