Help identify cranks & brakes
Hi all
Completely new to this forum but I've been lurking and making use of the vast amount of knowledge here while looking for a bike to buy. My cycling days were the 60/70's and things have moved on somewhat. I have now bought a 1984 Revell Romany, a 'classic' style tourer that I would have killed for in my youth. I've managed to gather info on most of the kit on the bike but the brake levers and cranks are eluding me. The cantilever brakes are Shimano 600 so I guess the graphic 'S' should stand for 'Shimano' but I can't find any other example of it on the web. Can anyone help please?

Thanks.
As close as I can measure, you're right about the 86 bcd. Maybe I'll have to take it apart to see if there are any SR marks.

Bump
Has anyone else got any ideas? I've had the levers and cranks apart but there's nothing else I can find, not even a part number, or country of origin. No amount of investigation has turned up an SR crank (or brake lever) with anything like these markings.

never seen the likes or it, before...but there's nothing that would suggest SR manufacturing to me: the crank seems French, the brake lever body looks just like a DiaCompe or Weinmann with a different blade...rare and interesting, sorry I'm no help.

As far as I know there were only two manufacturers of cranks with 86 BCD... Stronglight and SR. And I have both. I think the dimples are reminiscent of the Stronglight, but the fact that the bike had other Japanese components made me think perhaps this was a SR.

You're right that wherever I look there's only ever 2 manufacturers of 86bcd cranks. Maybe it's time to add a third? I just wish I knew who to add...

The brake levers look like imitation Dia-Compes. The crank looks like a Stronglite copy. No idea what the "S" stands for. Would not be the first time that some manufacturer copied a well known part.

These cranks were marketed by Madison cycles under the name of "Red S" and were quite expensive if i remember rightly. Had a set on my Romany until last summer, when i realised that there was no thread left holding the pedal on. Anyway, a quick search of the bits box in the shed uncovered a stronglight chainset which is virtually indentical.
Also as a bonus SOME Romany frames were built by Mercian i beleive

I recently used a Stronglight 99 on a project and I change my 2008 guess from SR to Stronglight. I have two versions of the 99 and this looks pretty close, if not identical, to what I think is the later version.

Hmmm... Those dustcaps and the chromed looking ring bolts look virtually identical to what's on my Stronglight Delta crank.....
It might mean something if they are original.
I'm liking the slots on the brake levers.

help identify this bike crank
I have a crank I need to help identify. It came from a Trek 830 Antelope (circa 1992), with purple trim.
The picture is at https://www.flickr.com/photos/72052263@N06/6506658755/in/photostream/ and there are two versions of the photo here at Flickr (enhanced and un-enhanced).
You should be able to zoom in on either photo of the crank (which is broken because of my buddy, the Incredible Bulk , who rode the bike recently).

Hi Alahol 2,
Just been scanning through the blogs and came across this. Did you ever find anything out about the cranks and brake lever manufacturers? My father has recently given me his 1984 Revell Romany which i have just had restored at Argos cycles in Bristol. My only problem is that i'm missing the left crank arm and need to find a replacement. I've done a lot of searching but not found any other references. Every component on the bike is original so it would be a shame not to be able to find a replacement.
Hope you can help.
thanks

Afraid I never did find anything about the cranks and brake levers. I've tried several times over the years to investigate but nothing new has emerged.
Anyway, the Revell Romany seems like a well put together piece of history so enjoy.

Is anyone there still?
I've been trawling the web for information on 'Red S' components for a few months, but found very little until now.
I have a pair of cantilever brakes bearing the same logo as you have on chain wheel. They're in very good shape, I was intending to use them on my British Eagle tourer, but events overtook me and they're surplus to requirements at the moment.
The only reference I did find was a picture (no longer available sadly) of an identical brake setup on a Longstaff tandem. -So somebody thought they were decent brakes!

I did a quick google search for "shimano red s crankset" and found this image result, although the Hilary Stone site is not coming up for me when I try to click through to the original image.

It may be worth emailing this UK seller to see if they have any information. (I'm sure the community here would appreciate an update to this thread if you find anything...)

I came across this when I was looking for old bike stuff so I thought I would resurrect this post in time for halloween! I remember Red S from the Freewheel catalogue in 1984. At the time they were a brand in their own right, listed alomgside Campagnolo, Shimano etc. If you want info find yourself a copy of the Freewheel catalogue and all will be answered!

Kudos to this thread. It has died and come back to life a few different times and the original posters are still on board, wow.
