Need help identifying my Schwinn

Hi everybody, long time lurker - first time poster. I decided to make an account to settle this once and for all - hopefully.

I purchased an older Schwinn hybrid road bike and the owner did not know anything about the frame (year, model, etc.) only that it was originally black and he had stripped it down to bare metal and primered it and rattle-canned it black. I went out and sanded down to the serial number so that I might have some sort of idea, and I found "SIL 10022" under the crankcase.

I don't have any great pictures. I'll try and get more later.

It's not a super pricey setup in any way shape or form. Biopace chainring, Michelin road tires, ugly beat-up rims, etc. I use it for commuting to work (roughly 2 miles round trip ) and the occasional ride to my parent's place about 10 miles away. I want to do a single speed conversion one of these days, but I'd like to figure out what exactly I have first.

If anyone knows you'll be my best friend forever  Thanks!

With Bio-Pace it was built between 1988 and 1992. The serial number would lead me to believe 1991. This site http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1991_2000/ may help you decide on a model. If you are going to single speed it try riding it for a month in one gear and decide if you really like that or not. From looking at the picture I would say the frame is too big for you as you have the saddle way to low for that frame. Good luck with it. Roger

Thanks for the link. I'll look into that.

The seat was set low at the time so that I can fit it into my Subaru. The picture was taken right when I got home with it :thumb:

Its a good job, but the black hides a lot. Up close it's pretty ugly. For this weekend I was thinking about stripping it down to the bare frame, strip all of the paint off, and take it to a local powdercoating shop to have it coated black again - possibly with some texture. I ordered new handlebars and I'll pick up some new brake lines and pads, just to give it a refresh.

Oh, and I don't know if this could be an era-verification, but on my 90's Schwinn BMX the Schwinn logo in front was a sticker. This bike has the logo riveted onto the frame.
