Chainstay to dropout weld?

No mention of this bike being repaired. Does this look to be the original weld to you?

Looks like it was done after the paint job.

Agreed......I too believe it is currently broken. If it had been rapaired (without a repaint) the paint would be burned away within an inch or more of the repair and look like crap......

original would have been brazed, not welded, and this may be the brazing just letting go...take it to a frame-repair guy, he should be able to re-braze but the paint around the site will be ruined.

Thanks for all the replies. It's not my bike and I'm not the seller. It just caught my eye as a Paramount currently under auction on eBay.

My '87 Paramount had a similar failure after tens of thousands of miles. Framebuilder Paul Sadoff (Rock Lobster in Santa Cruz) repaired it by cutting a "V" groove at the break, then brazing it. It's like new. Dr. Deltron found the crack and recommended Paul for the repair.

You should mention it to the seller. Though they may already know.

That doesn't look as if it's been welded or brazed at all, it looks as if it's split with nothing done to it. If that is, in fact, brass or silver shoved in the gap, it's a shoddy job if I've ever seen it - looks as if they old silver was not melted out, hence why the dropout does not sit correctly in the slot.

BTW, is that a chrome Paramount? The derailer cable stop looks it.

Kurt, it's item 390000216217. It's a green '72 P13-9 (in the ad they say it's a P15) with chrome tipped stays. That break looks to me like it's never been repaired.

Yes, that's the one. I tried questioning the seller before my original post here, but s/he (in)conveniently has yet to answer.

Small print says "we are not owner of item & can not describe every functionality. All items are sold AS IS. If item was not as described, you must initiate return within 3 DAYS of receipt by calling us at (310)530-xxxx. Buyer is responsible for all return ship cost (tracking & insurance required)."

The auction "winner" may be in for a surprise. It is tough to inspect a bike from a few pictures.

Again, thanks to everybody for the replies, especially Stan "the Paramount-man".

I saw the same listing and also emailed the seller, an "I Sold It" store.

No reply as yet.

Too bad, otherwise it looks like a fairly decent bike. I like Campus Green on Paramounts.

It looks to me like the brazing just let go, and the chainstay is sliding off the front of the dropout tongue. If that's all that's wrong, while it would mess with the chrome, the fix would not be that difficult. But who knows how extensive the collateral damage might be, what it looks like on the other side, etc.?

It would be an easy fix, shame about the chrome though. Whoever brazed that just didn't get enough penetration. The rounded over stays make a difficult braze, because you can't easily heat up the dropout and get penetration. Doubt there is any problem with the other side that couldn't be fixed in the brazing. It hasn't bent much.

Seller has responded to inquiries, and notified buyers that the frame will need repair.

Good for them. From the new close-up photo, it appears to be an easy fix.
