Vitus repaired!!!

a couple of weeks ago i posted asking to see if anyone could help point me in the right direction to repairing the broken derailleur hanger on a vitus 979 that i have acquired for 30 dollars. I spoke to several companies, but the repair was looking to be to costly for me.

fast forward to today, i find some free time and a derailuer hanger that i had sitting around. With some use of an angle grinder and a drill i come up with this.

It's not a 'kosher' repair... But I like it . I had rusted out cable guides on my Trek 760; I ended up cutting them off, and replacing them with some nice looking aluminum stick on guides. Not kosher, but keeps the wheels turning.

That is absolutely brilliiant! From the photos it looks as though you may have ground the original hanger flat and screwed the new hanger over the front. I'd never have thought of doing that. One more superb classic frame gets a new lease of life - and the 979 makes an awesome bike. Well Done!!!

I started out buy cutting the old hanger off so that the dropout match the non-drive side. Next i took the hanger that i was going to attach and lined the dropouts. The hanger was thicker at the bottem (deraileur threads) then the top, so i was able to grind the hanger so it would fit snugly over vitus hanger. Next i used 2 vice grips to hold the hanger onto the frame, while i drilled a hole the size of a chanring bolt. Luckly everything worked out and the chainring bolts fit fairly flush with the dropouts and everything lined up faily well.

I think I would have sought out a guy with a bridgeport mill but, an effective repair concept.

Looks good but how thick is everything on the right? Looks like your QR axle has to stretch over three drop outs now.. but whatever works. Ive gotta do some thinking with my 2100 frame with a really messed up hanger

the attached hanger is only 1/2 the width (~5mm) of the dropout it is attached to. So The QR has stretch over 1.5x stock and the derailed would sit ~5mm out further then stock.
