My Ebay Find isn't looking good

HI,
tried to email seller no luck asked for his phone called his home disconected land line.
Asked ebay to start a dispute, they say I'll have my money in 10 days, I'ld rather have the bike.
Doug

Do not despair. Get your $$ back. That's priority no. 1. Lots of Centurions out there. They're like busses; you miss one but another comes by later. :D

Looks great to me...did I miss an earlier posting on the matter?

Little more info

Hi
I found the bike on ebay 15 days or so ago, I placed abid and won, then paid for the bike, after a few emails, I tried to contact the seller, By starting a complaint with ebay, thru paypal.
WHen they sent me his land line it was dissconected so I am asuming he's moved on or had some type of crisis that prevents him from email or messages and he disconected his phone .
So I am assuming I won't be getting the bike.
Doug

Is there a possibility he has been affected by the hurricanes? Just a thought.

mtnwkr 09-14-08 07:08 PM

Yep, Probably Hurricanes.. I had the same problem a few years ago. I sent the guy some hate email because I never got my stupid $5 item, and I felt pretty ****ty about it when he finally got back to me and told me his house, and my item, had been washed away and his family is now homeless.

cointelpro 09-14-08 10:06 PM

Just wondering what people think is a reasonable amount of time to wait for a seller to ship a won item on eBay. I won an auction on a bike just over a week ago, but still have not received an updated invoice from the seller that included the shipping fee. He said he's been dealing with the chaos of the new school year (not sure if he's a teacher or a student) and that he's been dealing with unnamed "emergencies." While that all may be true, I feel like it's not unreasonable to expect a seller to figure out the details of the sale within a few days. I think people shouldn't list items if they're not ready to ship them. Thoughts?

Agreed...... I have it boxed and ready to rock before I even list it. Goes out within 2 days of payment. It's not hard to drop something of at the post.....

agreed, if you can't do that then your not ready to list the item.

StephenH 09-14-08 10:58 PM

Was there a hurricane 15 days ago? Seems like he would have had plenty of time to ship it still.

canonizer 09-15-08 06:07 AM

Is that the comp t/a? I might have bid you up substantially on it! awesome looking bike.

edit: nope, the one i was bidding on was in CA.

bummer about the shipping.

cb400bill 09-15-08 06:29 AM

eBay states seller is in Lumberton, North Carolina, United States. Lumberton is off I-95 between Charlotte and Wilmington. I haven't heard of any Hurricane damage in that area.

miamijim 09-15-08 07:48 AM

I have my bikes ready to go but not boxed. In the event someone local wants a test ride or local pickup I dont want to box it a second time.

2 or 3 days is a reasonable amount of time to get a bike on the road. I work full time. If one of my auctions ends at 9pm Monday and I'm at work all day Tuesday its not getting out until Wednesday.

The bicycle Gods have smiled on ME

HI,
I finally reached the seller, he was dealing with a Death in his family and was out of town, He plans to ship on Weds, So it will possiably be coming to me very soon.
I feel bad about all the wine but it is scarry when you call someone and their phone is dissconected/
I'll post pics when she's all cleaned up, and will add her Numbers to records.
I am sorry to find out he lost a family member.:twitchy:
Doug

canonizer 09-16-08 10:49 AM

I think you should ask for some money back. All he had to do was notify buyers and reassure them that he wasn't stealing their money. Death in the family sucks, but it would have taken little effort to keep the peace.

It's interesting that your crisis assumption was both charitable and correct. Congrats on getting the bike.

cb400bill 09-16-08 10:57 AM

That would be out of line.

"Sorry to hear of the death in your family, but you inconvenienced me, so give me a discount on that bike."

Not something I could ever say to someone.

jet sanchEz 09-16-08 11:03 AM

Agreed, provided the story is true. Death in the family is very hard to deal with but the disconnected phone sounds pretty fishy to me.

ZeRinger 09-16-08 11:09 AM

You know, not to sound like a heartless tool... but if I had a dollar for every time I got the "death in the family" excuse from a seller who slacked on shipping or communication I could buy myself a nice lunch. While I am sure there are those who are being honest about it, I am also pretty sure it gets used a lot as a get out of jail free card. It is a great way to turn and upset buyer ready to leave you negative feedback into a sympathetic buyer who will give you all the time in the world (almost)

Only once did I have a buyer email me back saying "You know what? I dropped the ball and forgot to ship it... I'm very sorry about that!." It happens, and I didn't give the guy a negative for that. ;-)

TromboneAl 09-16-08 11:14 AM

I found the listing, and that looks like a nice bike (same as wife's but with different colors and in better condition). My take from the seller's feedback and description is that he's legitimate, and that you'll get the bike. I'd be privately skeptical about the excuse, but it will probably turn out OK.

I think you handled things correctly. Keep us posted.

Is it totally out of line? I'm not totally sure. If ebay sellers want to act like businesses they should treat their clients with similar respect. An auto reply that said "family emergency, item shipping will be delayed and I will respond to your email as soon as I can" would be sufficient. Maybe the OP overreacted, but we're throwing in a lot of trust not to hear back from sellers if we've done our part by paying quickly.

Even under the circumstances, I'd say bad feedback is possibly warranted, if not annoying bs/escalating back and forth.

maybe it's heartless, i'm just not sure it's totally unwarranted.

I've never gotten that excuse, but I would be curious how many times the seller's grandmother has died. I would certainly wait to receive the bike before dropping the complaint. I have had people that just totally forgot about an auction, refused to answer my emails, and finally woke up when they got a dispute. That totally blows my mind, but things happen. I've never left negative feedback though, they always shipped right away.

What the heck

hi,
iT Showed up Tuesday afternoon I asked the Mr Brown how the heck did it get here so fast, and he said its only coming from NC so they must have shiped on Monday by truck to arrive weds..
Well I pulled it from two boxes well packed. looked pretty nice lots of that really old grease on all parts, and the rear wheel was pretty dry and crunchy, soaked the chain over night, and wiped the frame down after pulling the wheels, the tires were acouple years old looking but never used**********
I tried to pull the rear bearing but it was way down inside the shamono wheel recesed acouple inches so my car tools were pretty worthless., I called my LBS and asked how much to clean and pack the rear hub bearings and cassete, he said around 30 bucks plus parts. I am on my way.
He put air in the tires and they seem to hold. 125psi... whooo.
the rims look great as do the hubs, that rear wheel does sound like its full of dry sand pre cleaning .. hehe I mentioned the springs were nearly gone on the Skewer Set Rd and he said he had a nice set for 14.00 so I bought them too, But I saved the originol one that says shamono open close ,, pack rat...
So I headed back to the House snd the dirty frame, finished my first cleaning of the frame and notice I could now see the chain links in the mud in the bottom of the soaking dish...
I could now how rusted they were and it looked a little bit worse for the rust now.
I could have rubbed it out with steel wool but the links stil felt crunchy, and the pins looked like they may slip thru the reatiners.
Called the bike shop and said what size chain, he looked at the cassette and said a 6 speed???
HE pulled a new chain and put it with the wheel for my pick up. at 10 am when they open. I also got a air tire cap for changing the tire nipple to a schreader and then I remove the brass cap replace the orignal caps..
I had 2 extra seat's not in use,,, but my guess is if this bike is 1/2 as sweet as it looks it will steal the B17 soooo sorry old faithful mountian bike the original deep-v WTB seat will return to its original place of honor, ( I plan to ride MTB when the weather is a bit wet, snow, like heill and so on))...
off the mountian and the original deep-v WTB seat will return to its original place of honor, My ars don't care for it like the B17, but I ve already spent over 500.00 month on bike junk me :crash:wifes is threatoning to have a bike yard sell if I don't cool my jets my next weekend I work in the LAB I do hide the bike locks key, just in case, and then Krepton cable lock would wear her out if she tried to hacksaw it.:innocent:. hehe ((what lock honey)) ...

SO its a work in progress.
The tape looks OK the hood covers are dryrotting abit on the brakes but I'll replace them later they are a little sticky...
Doug

TromboneAl 09-18-08 06:59 AM

Congrats. Use WD-40 for cleaning the hoods.

Here's a shot of the wife's Craigslist Dave Scott after cleanup:
