How much do you think?

I'm going to check out a late '80s early '90 Diamondback Apex tomorrow. The bike is reportedly in good condition and has not been used that much over the years (sat in the basement alot). It has Shimano Deore DX components. The asking price is $150. What do you think is a fair price for this ride?

Thanks
kg

I think we might need more info, but with what little I know about a D-back Apex, my out of the box sense is, that's a little high. But you live near the city. Bike prices in NYC are high. Around where I live, a former high end, rigid fork MTB would sell for around $100 if it's in good condition, ready to ride. In Long Island, I'd expect the prices to be higher. If the bike is nice, I'd offer a little less and see where the owner goes with the offer.
Remember the most important factor, the bike MUST be your frame size. If not, I'd pass. If at all possible, ride the bike. If you can't ride it because of the bikes condition, or if the chain is rusty or if it's covered in dust and dirt, that price is high. Take into account any repairs that might be needed.

I think a lot. To date, I hadn't thought of a Diamondback Apex though. Offer $125 and see if he'll come down some.

The Apex was probably toward the upper end of DB's MTB lineup. From Bikepedia the '93 Apex retailed for $715 and the had Shimano LX. The Deore DX would put it late 80's/early 90's. I personally have sold even mid-level rigid MTBs a number of times fairly easily in the $120-170 range. But, mine are completely overhauled and have not been sitting unused for years. If it needs work it might be an okay buy unless you need to pay someone else to do the work. If it needs a lot of work (tires, tubes, good cleaning, cables, pads, full tune up, etc) it is not worth anything close to the $150 asking price. But, like others have said offer less.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to start at $80 and go as high as $100 only if the bike seems to be in decent shape. From what I see on CL and Ebay these old MB seem to be in this range. Although, like redxi pointed out the Apex is a higher end DB.
