Am I reading this serial# right???
http://s246.photobucket.com/albums/g...old%20schwinn/
According to a recent post in another thread by Sierra (with documents); this is a Japanese built Schwinn from 1971. There are no decals to indicate the model....does this sound about right?? Would it be a Panasonic built bike? It had a kickstand. one steel wheel, one alloy wheel, sun tour RD, shimano FD; forged drop out(?), steel handle bar with suicide levers.....I feel pretty sure its not a top end bike. I want to build a single speed; but I don't want to trash anything unique.....so I thought I'd better check first..... Thanks for your input..... |
I think the G in the serial means Giant built. It's a mid eighties bike.
|
it's a schwinn.........not a giant....
|
The previous poster meant the frame was manufactured by Giant. He is correct. It was manufactured by Giant in Taiwan, in Decemebr 1983, making it a 1984 model bicycle.
|
OOOOOh my apologies...... What about my assessment of quality/value......should I not SS it? It doesn't feel particularly light......
Armed with the year of mfg, I went to the 84 catalog and it appears to be a Traveller, (bottom of the lineup). That was the only road bike I saw with a steel handle bar like mine..... |
Yes, it does appear to be a Traveller, based on the year, tubing decal and dropouts. I'm not a big fan of fixie conversions, but why not do the conversion while you keep an eye out for something better/lighter? While it's not the lightest, you could do worse. At least it's got plain gauge, CrMo, main tubes.

The price was right, and I have a TALL college kid/customer (read poor) looking for a cheap ride......
