Campy Synchro Color Codes?

Straighten me out on this if I am off base. I believe when Campy came out with their early efforts in downtube Synchro shifting in the mid to late 80's, they employed a color coding system to designate the make of freewheel which the shifters were configured to work with. I believe the color coding consisted of a drop of paint on one of the internal parts in the shifting mechanism. Is anyone familiar with this and if this is true, does anyone have any knowledge of the color coding definitions (which colors indicate which freewheels). Thanks!

I thought it was the color of the index gear itself, but there was a color scheme. Been a while since I had one in my hand.
