Japanese shopping bike?

I just snagged what was described as a Japanese shopping bike off Craigs List. The person bought and used it while living in Japan. It is a Bridgestone Singlestar. It has a 3 speed Nexus rear hub with a drum brake. The front hub is a BridgestoneTensoumushi generator hub. The brackets for the basket curve around the front light. It has a rear wheel stand. The valve stems are like nothing I have seen before. Anybody have any information. By the way, it was $10.

I would have paid that for it...perhaps even more! Looks like a decent around town bike.

Those are 650B wheels right (or 650A??)? Good luck finding tires...As for the valve stem, maybe it's a Dunlop type. If your pump works with Schrader valves you should be OK.

My wife had a bike like that while living in Japan for 5 years. That type of design has been very common over there for many decades, although many are/were single speed rather than 3 speed IGH. Very practical since there are so many mom and pop stores on every block, from hole-in-the-wall restaurants to fish mongers to veggie markets to shoe stores.
