I did it again - Gitane

Three weeks after buying my 1984 Gitane Sprint I found myself hooked on this classic/vintage bike thing and bought a 1984 Gitane Tour de France. Everything is original on the bike except for the Simplex shifters and the tires. I bought it from the original owner who is a professional bike mechanic.

I now have my eye on my dad's mid-70's Peugeot (model unknown right now) and his Teledyne Titan (that will hang on the wall).

Looks beautiful! Just be careful - this is an addiction that really can never be cured :)

I'm still on the hunt for my first Gitane. It's great you were able to get a Tour de France to start out with. Around here, all I've been able to find are lowly Gran Sport De Luxes

Truly beautiful bike.

Awesome! Is that an Ofmega Mistral groupo? Modolo Kronos brake levers? Kinda hard to tell with such a small pic. Got close ups? I'd LOVE to see a pic of the Teledyne.....I've got a BB spindle for one around here somewhere. Hopefully one day I'll find a frame to build around it!

Photos - of course I have more photos. Yes, that is an Ofmega Mistral crankset (52-42) and derailleurs. The brakes are Modolo Speedy. Freewheel is a Maillard 700 12-21T, original Aspin wheels with Vittoria sew ups, original Bernard Hinault saddle. Finally, it's got the first generation Look pedals from 1985. I rode around a parking lot briefly with it and loved the feel of the bike. I'll more than likely switch out the derailleurs just so I can save the Ofmega's in their original condition (i.e. not have them break). I'm looking at also going to a Regina Superleggera alloy freewheel at 13-26T because I know I'm going to want to ride this more and I don't have the lung capacity of 20 yrs ago to push the 12-21T all the time.

The Teledyne has got a tear at the seat binder bracket which my dad is trying to get welded. I'm talking in earnest with him about letting me have - fixed or not. If I get a photo I'll post it.

Love it! I've got 3 Mistral rears (ones pink) a braze on front and the composite shifters....All NOS and 2 in boxes. Cool boxes! Sooo 80's. Gotta love that stuff!
Whats the deal with the Stronglight headset? Does it have peices of inner tube on it to keep the water and road crud out? That's something I did on my winter commuter and my MTB's....

Anyways, I love that bike! How come you keep findin' all the good stuff on the dry side of the mountains?

^ I think that's the dreaded "plastic cup" version of the venerable Stronglight HS. At least I hate the plastic ones: the parts shift around in the headtubes and eventually get all sloppy: give me the alloy ones everytime.
Other than that: nice Gitane!
