The irony is everyone is posting his own Raleigh Professional while the one bike that is in question remains photo-free. At least this brought many of the Raleigh Pro owners out of the woodwork, always a good thing. I think it remains such a landmark bike in that quite a few remember seeing it in the shop when it came out. It really looked ahead of its time in some ways ie that fastback cluster and was not your typical Raleigh. I always thought it was one of the more beautiful bikes made, even if it lacked some of the Italian mystique. OF course, I was around 13 when I saw it and it might as well have been 100,000 ducats

I agree; I missed the white 69 in the stores at the time, but when the brown fastback one came out, I was in love. I think they were $500. brand new at the time, still way out of my price range. I had to make do with a used 60s Carlton frame I slowly built up into all Campagnolo.

As I said before, the fastback stay feature had been a Carlton design among other British builders.

I forgot, who did your repaint? Was it CyclArt or Joe Bell? I remember when you first posted these photos, proud as a papa with tike as you waited long enough! heh....

Meanwhile, I think I ended up with a B- rated imitation from CORSO, loaded with Simplex and cheap parts. I even did a damn paper route with the red beast, but it was a major step up from the SpiderBike love that had festered before that.

I only have about 20 miles on it (with one wipe-out ). I found it quite comfortable, despite being a tad large for me. It was very responsive when I took it hard into that turn... until the tires washed out on the small pebbles. I'll be rigging out a better way to convey water (no bosses), and have her ready to go on a nice 2009 spring day.

Good lord, man, that is terrible! I have to say, I know a bit how you felt. I wrecked on my De Rosa going full tilt, but in a total straight line, running into a half filled plastic water bottle that rolled out from under a car. I hit the swine at around 22mph and went over the handlebars, landing on my head and shoulder. My cheapo Giro Transfer cracked through in three places but I was totally fine. My shoulder, arm, and knee wasnt, however. Amazingly, the bike was ok besides road rash on the Campy SR brake lever and ruined Bike Ribbon tape. I landed on my Head instead of my bike.... I'll never not wear a helmet again, unless on a beach cruiser. That $30 saved my life. You must have been mortified going down with that new paint. Glad all appears well.

I couldnt bear to add the bottle cage on my Pro. IF you see that last photo in a previous post, I carry my bottle in my back center pocket and dont even feel it. It's my vintage aesthetic compromise.

Fortunately, I was pretty mesmerized about the whole thing. Kept hold of the bars all the way down. The Raleigh jersey was a casualty, but being acrylic, wasn't a loss I mourn. One chip to the paint, and a scuff on the pedal and a brake hood. Only some road rash - but it kept me off bikes for about 2 weeks. I'm thinking of getting one of those seat post mounted bottle holders. Easy on, easy off, no danger to paint.

SoFlaRaleigh - no need to delete. We've been all over the place on this. All of us.

huh. still no pics. I suspect that if it is a Pro it'll be a mark V, in mink blue (the only proper color, of course).

We both came out lucky on this one. The first thing I DID was look at my bike to see what had happened! The other thing I distinctly remember was how damn LOUD it was when the helmet hit the ground and scraped across the chipseal. I remember thinking, "Good lord, this is Loud!" as that horrible scrape reverberated through my skull. It was the first shunt I've had since I was 12.

On the water bottle holder, the good thing about that option you suggest is the lack of harm to the paint. The bad? It looks like a Triathlete Bike that should be aluminum/ti/carbon with time trial bars! heh... Those double "behind the seat" holders just look so out of place. I think I might opt for the vintage TA solution with some protection under the bands. I have that under all my bar clamps whether cable holders, shifters, or guides.

Lastly, I totally agree with ole Zorro; surely no need to delete the lovely coffee/brown '71 Professional from this informative thread; all the photos have helped.

Some small part of me is starting to believe that this bike is really a repainted (And overly re-equipped) 70's Grand Prix.

I really do hope I'm wrong though. I will read the thread again.

Read it again, Plain lugs, wrap over seat stays, I will play Devil's advocate and say it might be a modded out Raleigh Grand Prix dressed up as something nicer.
