World Sport Conversion
I recently purchased (what I believe to be) a World Sport frame, and converted in into a NYC single speed commuter. The serial on the right drop is G0684, which indicated it was made by Giant in 1984. 3 things seem strange. I couldn't find the red color scheme in the '84 catalog, the decals don't say "world sport", and the head badge says "Chicago"....I am sorta new at Schwinn genealogy.

The number on the driveside rear dropout is a date code, not a serial number. It does, as you say, indicate your frame was constructed in June, 1984, by Giant on Taiwan. Look carefully at the head badge for four small, lightly stamped digits. Those represent the assembly date. The first three digits are the day of the year (001-366) and the last digit is the last digit of the year. The serial number is in one of three places: 1) on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell, 2) on the head tube just above the bottom bearing cup, or 3) on the left (non-drive side) rear dropout.
The 1984 model year World Sport was only available in black or sky blue, so your frame is unlikely to be a World Sport. The 1984 Super Le Tour was available in Scarlet, as was the high end 1984 Peloton, but I don't believe the Peloton was built by Giant. The low end 1984 World was available in "Red", and was probably made by Giant.
Even though the Chicago factory closed in December, 1983, the company continued to put "Chicago" on many of the head badges since Schwinn maintained its headquarters in Chicago until the 1993 bankruptcy.
Check for the assembly date on the head badge as the frame may have been built in June 1984, but the assembly may have occurred later after the model year change (probably in September or October, 1984). If the assembly date is later in 1984 it's probably an '85 model, but even the '85 World Sport was only available in Charcoal or Ice Blue (no red).
EDIT - Fixed typo "...but the assembly may have occurred later after the model year change (probably in September or October, 1985)"

Figured it out, with the help of colors and decals in the '84 catalog, that it was a World model. What were some of the frame differences in the world sport, world, wourd tourist models of that era?
Thank you for your help Scooper!

There was just an '84 World with that paint/decal theme sold on Craigslist here in KC. I don't know as to any frame/geometry differences, but I think that they had varying grades of components. My everyday bike is an '85 World Sport and, framewise it looks just like yours only charcoal grey.

The World Sport is built with 4130 and has higher quality dropouts with an integral derailleur hanger.
