Monkey Wards Spaceliner.. where does it fit in the like up?

I love reading this forum. It seems that there is an almost inexhaustible amount of knowledge blurted out on these pages every day. So since I have been lurking the past few months I have developed a hankering to pick up and old classic, buy a few tools, and commence to wrenching this winter.

This bike popped up on CL this morning.

I of course am not going to buy it since it is clearly in fantastic shape. But I am curious as to where in the hierarchy of bikes in the 60's. SHe looks a little sparce in the accessories department. I would have expected a psuedo gas tank with a name like Space Lner.

This looks like it might be a better choice; but of course it too is way overpriced.

Meanwhile the search will continue and thanks for the entertainment.

i had this nice response typed out. it was perfect then... your logged off. damn it.

this is the short version of the original. the first bike, the 1965 jc higgins(jch) is most likly a pre 64' cuz in 64' sears dropped the jch name and sold their bikes as sears and i think in those days, murray made bikes for sears. after the fully loaded cruisers of the 50's, most middle weight cruisers lost their tanks, then racks and eventually most headlights. id buy it for $200 and joe doaks may so as well,, but you may not think it is worth that much, reguardless if it actually was or was not.

i own 7 cruisers, with most from the 50's and up to the 90's. my 51' schwinn spitfire started it all for me. now im hooked on old ss cruisers, and even like the new ones as well. so it shouldn't come to a shock to you that i would buy the 2nd bike shown for $75 as well. know the brand? with a rebuild with new chrome fenders, wheelset and fat whitewalls, new saddle and grips along with other things and you got yourself a nice "custom" cruiser. it may look old and weather worn, but you never know if it may be a diamond in the rough waiting for you to turn it into sparkiling prize.

Thanks for the response. I knew about the JCW to Sears brand change because of another hobby, ( I collect and repair old pellet rifle and pistols). Although I did not realize that the name change was so universal. I emailed the fella up north about the ugly green bike but have not recieved an answer yet. The Space LIner is out of my budget plus I want to attempt a rebuild project. I will keep checking CL daily, I am also curious about older three or five speeds.
