The Enigma of the Suteki

Once I had my Lotus Mixte.. one Japanese mixte didn't seem like enough.. and sooner than I wanted a Suteki came along. Now, like most people, I'd never heard of a Suteki -- but the "Made in Japan" sticker and the Shimano 600 components (well, except for the Shimano Tourney brakes and the Shimano Adamas pedals) called out... and depsite her Sears heritage (she originally sold there for $499 in 1982) so she came home.

Meet the newest geisha: Suteki (her front fender is off at the moment -- I'm touching up its scrapes with nail polish).

Although, she does have these weird dork nuts covering the rear spindles that I MUST get rid of:

My first gift to her was the new Crane (Made in Japan) Bell recommended to me on my "ding ding ding" thread"

Some more photos:

Miss Suteki also captivated my assistants (Raleigh Sprite the tortoiseshell and Zebulon the Labradoodle):

I'd love to know more about the Suteki -- all I know now is that they were made by Panasonic for Sears.

I love the bell -- it's loud, clear, and has an amazing sustain...

Those "dork nuts" were only meant to cover the axles during shipping so they wouldn't poke through the sides of the box. I have no idea why some people left them on.

Remember, these bikes did come from Sears.

Ah, well, then -- the dork nuts will come in handy should I need to ship a bike.

Out of curiosity, how do you know that Sears sold it for $499 in 1982?

I googled it :-)

There is very little info about Suteki's out there -- the best source being:

I was the underbidder on that bike. I have a men's Suteki that is maroon like the one on the website you linked to. I just put moustache bars on it last night. Great bike. Yours is very nice.

Did he ship it to you for $32?

he did --- and I was surprised -- it came Fedex on Thursday. I was waiting for the email that said "hey, I made a mistake with the cost of shipping" -- but instead of getting that -- I got the bike.

I'm pretty happy with it -- it needs a little bit of cleaning up -- lots of little dings/scrapes in the paint (but some blue nail polish fixed it right up). She'll get a full tune-up and some new tires and then I think she'll be one of my two favorites (the Lotus being the other).

Your new Suteki looks exactly like my daughter's new bike. Sweet riding Mixtes.

Well, congratulations. I hope to get my wife one like yours (that was supposed to be hers). Can you do me a favor and take a photo of how the rack is attached under the seat?

Thanks. I know they made men's city style bikes with bars like yours as well. I like the Adamas pedals and would still have them on mine if I could find some clips to use with them.

I'll try to get some in the sunlight tomorrow -- it has an unusual bracket that wraps around the fender in addition to the usual bolt on...

Is her Suteki decal in as horrid of shape as mine is? I used some shocking pink nail polish to spiff my up -- looks much better and was easy to do. I'll use a gold paint pen to outline the letters when I'm done with the other side....

My daughter's Suteki was in good but grubby condition.

It needed a little bit of touch up but the paint was in overall pretty good condition. The Track 10 stickers are quite faded. I replaced the broken shifters, put on new shift and brake cables, replaced the brake pads, and did a bunch of lubing, cleaning, and polishing.

One of the most important changes I had to make was to the original saddle. At first, it appeared to be fine. But when I discovered an ant nest inside of it, I replaced it with a Brooks CR-3.

Ant's Nest? YIKES!

Mine is pretty clean -- actually, amazingly clean -- just the tiniest bit of rust -- and no broken parts.

I thought I'd add my photos for anyone looking around. I am going to do a paint job later this year, and have reproduction decals made for it. It's such a nice bike.

If you still want one there is one in Ann Arbor. Same color as yours, too.

wow, nice lookin' bikes! How are you guys able to get craiglisters to ship so far away? I would be too nervous trusting them (with no ratings or anything to go by). I would love to have a Suteki mixte!
