Hi there!

I'm thinking of changing my 6 speed Sachs with an 8 speed Sachs casette. Does anyone know if this can be done? What will I need in order to do this? I have the Campagnolo SR rear and front derrailleur.

Ok it's quite helpful but does not answer my specific question which is replacing a 6 speed Sachs Maillard with an 8 speed. Does anyone know if the 8 speed will fit, meaning there is enough space on such an older type of freewheel? Thanks for clarifying.

I think you will first have measure the spacing to see if there is room then some of the mech forum

I think more then likely you will have to spread your rear end, but I could be wrong.... I'm planning the move from 5 to 7 speed

Your 6 speed is probably 126mm OLD, and the 8 speed would be 130mm.
I did this on my '87 Schwinn Super Sport. I just pull the dropouts apart an extra 2mm on each side when inserting the rear wheel. Seems to work just fine.
I used a wheel with a freehub and 8 speed cassette though. Not sure what an 8 speed freewheel would entail.

I'm not sure there is such thing as an 8-speed freewheel.
I think by that time all wheels had switched to freehubs, so you may have to get a new wheel or settle for seven speeds.

I had an 8 speed freewheel on a Giant Allegre , if you can find the Giant's rear spacing you'll have your answer.It was equipped in Campagnolo Stratos, so if you find this rear hub's spacing it should help. I'm pretty sure it was 126mm though.

Thanks for all the info guys. I have measured the rear hub distance of both my bikes and they are 130mm.
So I guess it will fit an 8 speed as well. Thanks!
