Wrong BB for my Campy
I don't know much on how to find the correct BB for the Camp Record 52/42 crankset on my '76 Superior. The BB that was on my bike with the previously wrong crankset had to be ground off a bit on the ends to allow the dust caps to screw on all of the way. Will someone tell me which BB I need to look for for this setup?

SD,
It sounds as if the bolt heads were too thick for those dust caps and the Campy crank. I have had this problem once and did the same thing (sanded the heads of the bolts to make them thinner) because the bolts were from the hardware store and not specifically for cranksets. If this is all you needed to do, you are good to go and don't need to replace the BB. If you feel as if you need a pair of bolts which are specific for cranksets, you can get a set here: http://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi...d=886600711944 Best of luck. |
The other possibility is that the taper is wrong for the cranks and they sit too far down on the BB. In which case you do need a different BB axle. The end of the axle should not be flush with the crank.
EDIT: Also possible the taper on the cranks is heavily worn. Not much to be done there. |

Sounds as if a new BB is in order. Your best bet might be to take the crankset and Superior to the LBS and let them help you find the best cartridge BB to use.
The BB on my '79 Schwinn Traveler is set up with nuts which go onto threaded studs from the ends of the spindle. I had forgotten about those. Best of luck. |

My setup uses a nut screwed onto a threaded stud that is on the BB. The dust cap for my Campy has a portion on the inside that interferes with the nut causing it not to screw flush.
