Help me identify this late 80s early 90s Cannondale
I'm looking for a touring bike for commuting and I think this one might fit the bill. But the owner does not know much about the bike. It was bought in 1992 and has suntour components. As you can see the gooseneck and the handlebars have been changed. Apparently some sort of suspension gooseneck and it is an 18 speed. I think it is a touring frame because looking at the catologs the rear drops outs for a racer is different.
The owner is asking for $200 Canadian.
Here is the only picture I have so far.
What do you think? I think it is a 1990 but nothing matches it by colour and decals.

Most likely a 1988 ST400. You can check the '88 catalogue and the serial number at https://www.vintagecannondale.com

Whoever put on that crappy seat with the mount on backwards, mountain bike handlebars with unused twist grips, and rear rim with the dork disc, should be smacked.
Here is a link to the pdf of the 1988 catalog.

Thanks guys.
@ch400bill, too funny, you definately made me laugh!
Is it a good purchase?
I'm going to ask the owner if he has the orginal parts still. hopefully he has.

You might be better off buying something on ebay or waiting for another local deal... maybe a lugged steel frame with centerpull brakes?

Ya have to haggle!
I'd buy it, for less, if possible.
I'm still sorry that I sold my '86 ST400. Got it for $20, but sold it to a very good friend, so it's still "in the family".
S'OK though, I still have 2 other '80's 'Dales; SR600 & SM700.
Me? I love old Cannondales!

What an absolutely goofy looking bike. Someone did a real number on that thing.
You'd end up spending a ton just to get in back in reasonable shape. Not worth it, imo.

+1 Not worth it unfortunately due to the modifications. Get one with the original configuration. If you do all the work, then perhaps make an offer.

I pulled the trigger after all.
So the bike sat around for a while. I was able to get the bike for $150. Remember everything seems to be more expensive in Canada.
I'm a newbie but I I'm looking at doing this myself. First thing I need to do is catalog what is original, well I know the frame and forks are ...
I think my first challenge is to repack all the bearings. Then I think handle bars, seat and brake levers and cables are the first things to get replaced.
I have a couple of books from the library to help me out, one of them is the Zinn book.
Man I went from 1 bike I had not ridden for 20 years to owning 7 bikes in three months. I've been bitten hard by this bike disease.
Wish me luck.
p.s. Does anyone know anything about those hubs? They are shimano stamped D F and have what I think are oiling holes.
