What do you mean? You like it? Or not?

He turned an old Raleigh into a fixie. Is that so unique? What am I missing here?

cudak888 11-05-08 06:34 PM

The first pic is not the same bike. He was even kind enough to keep the chainstay derailer stop braze-on intact. I see nothing to complain about, provided this thing was a mess in the first place.

Other than that it has no brakes, bad handlebars, and relatively no character... there's nothing too terrible about it. It's a Raleigh, not too terrible rare. It's not nearly as bad as that poor Wilier Triestina that went from AMAZING to almost literal S***.
I do like those tires, though.

When you say "there are no words", you really mean that this bike is not worth making a comment, correct?

banjo_mole 11-05-08 07:05 PM

Wait... Why are there no brakes on it now?
That seems unsafe.

All this talk of fixies and how bad they are,
and I'd assumed a "fixie" was a "fixer-upper."

Stamp nOOb on my forehead already.

longbeachgary 11-05-08 08:00 PM

I have to agree. I'm not sure what the facination is with fixed gear bikes and taking reasonably nice bikes and making irreversible changes. It's not that I don't like a good track bike - I do live near a velodrome (Cal State Dominguez Hills) and like to watch races but I just don't understand.

Bikedued 11-05-08 09:27 PM

You haven't been to a bike jousting event I take it. It gets worse, lol. Vintage road bikes crashing to the ground in piles with riders on top of them. It made me cringe... Hey at least they're being ridden.:D,,,,BD

cyclotoine 11-05-08 10:06 PM

Are those fillagree or capella lugs?

cudak888 11-05-08 10:28 PM

Capellas, I believe.

-Kurt

P.S.: He left the centerpull stop on - must be for a reason, eh?

divineAndbright 11-05-08 10:34 PM

Well I see a brake lever, though riding brakeless isn't as bad as it seems, so long as your arent turning a monster gear its pretty easy to stop quickly enough.
I dont understand why did he put mountain bike tires on that thing though.

You guys need to get over this obsession with FG/SS. Find something you can really get into like the "Axis of Evil."

No, he means that all the decals are gone. There are no words on the frame.
You can order new word to stick on the frame from ebay. They even come in gold, just like the origional words.

sailorbenjamin 11-05-08 10:58 PM

I was gonna do that to my Supercourse, more or less. As it turns out, I found a better frame for the job and then a pile of parts to make the SC work like it used to. But I still plan on painting the rusty thing someday.

jetbike 11-05-08 11:25 PM

I ride a fixie on a daily basis, brakeless too.

What I mean is destroying a pretty, old bike, to create a new/old ugly bike that probably won't be ridden within a year, therefore wasting said bike.

There are no prior photos to pass judgment as to how pretty this machine was prior to the conversion (remember what I said about that first pic). According to the owner, the actual machine converted was quite bad - had a photo of its prior state been posted, it might have been agreed that the cheap repaint it received did it no additional harm.

what i find offensive is the seat angle and how the bar is turned so the sweep is up not back

Two reasons I can think of why it is there.
1. He has a brake lever and just hasn't gotten around to installing the brake or is deciding if he wants a front brake.

2. He needs it for the spacer.

cudak888 11-06-08 04:32 PM

Exactly.

P.S.: This post has been nothing but a troll from the beginning - shouldn't even be here, IMO.

bibliobob 11-06-08 05:37 PM

Agreed. I enjoy a good ss/fg debate as much as the next person but this bike isn't a really good example either for or against ss/fg conversions.

Let's save our energy for something like that Wilier travestina

Capella. Like the chrome ones in my avatar. Painting around them is something I never want to do again!
