Paramount Mountain Bike: Stem Size?

I have a 1992 Paramount PDG 70 mountain bike. The bike came with a very short stem, and I was looking to get something that brought the bars up higher. I purchased a Nitto Dirtdrop stem, 22.2 and it is too small. The stem slides in easily and wiggles around. The gap is too large for shim. So this is an oversized quill? Does anybody:

1. Know what the correct stem diameter is?

2. Know where I could get a replacement stem with more height?

I'm pretty sure that by '92 the PDG mountain bikes were all using 1-1/8" steerers which take a 1" (25.4mm) quill stem. Aside from eBay, I'm not sure where you'd find one though.
