Amateur needing advice...on a bike.

Hello again to All!

I've just come across a Raleigh Marathon and I don't know whether it's a fair price or I'm getting ripped-off..

It's a Raleigh Marathon made in the early 90's with Shimano components, with 105 break levers. Apparently it's the one with sealed bottom bracket and hubs.

Does $250 sound like a good deal?

Here's a link to it: https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/bik/921103662.html

Any help is appreciated!

Is it the one on Seattle Craig's List?

I'm 99.9% sure that bike is from the 80s not the 90s. I think the price is high, but not outrageous if it fits you and is in ready to ride condition.

It seems like Seattle has very high bike prices, but I would still try to talk him down.

Edit: Also, ignore what he says about size. that bike is far too small for someone 6' tall.

Yes, it IS in Seattle!

What's a good price?
Right now, I'm close to blind on how much I should pay.

I'd pass on that bike at that price, no matter the vintage.

One reason would be it apparently has 27" wheels for which it is getting ever-increasingly difficult to find quality tires. The pedals look like cheal quill-type. Another would be the stem shifters. I hate stem shifters and (to me) they are a hallmark of a cheap bike. The seat looks TERRIBLE but the photos are so poor, you can't tell anything about the condition of the bike.

Recommendation - PASS

It's hard to say, because prices vary so much by market, but to me that's a <$100 bike, maybe $150 if it's pristine and you really want to start riding today.

In this thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...rathon+raleigh T-Mar says that it retailed for $219 in 1985.

+1 His sizing is way off, I would think his bike would fit someone more or less around 5'2". In Ohio that price is nuts, but Ohio is economically depressed... so it's hard to say.

This is a 22 inch frame and at 6' I have the seat set pretty high.

I should say 3.50, but I won't.
I will say it's far too small for most folks 5'6 or taller, is overpriced by about double for NC market, the bar wrap implies some serious scratches somewhere, and it looks like he's only repaired when he had to, with whatever was on hand. Bike just looks like it, somehow. That's why good pics are essential.

You really need to develop a target list of suitable bikes, brands, and size. The good deals on Craigs List do not last long enough for you to post a what do you think of this one query. Don't worry, good deals come along in active markets like Seattle every week or two.

No road bike fits a range of eight inches in height. Bike sizing is usually in centimeters, sized every two or so. Since 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters, you can see that one size bike is not going to fit an eight inch range in height. Someone 5-4 might need a 49cm frame, someone 5-11 might need a 56 cm frame. Its a very individual fit process.

This bike sounds expensive, around here, I might be able to get $125 to $150 for it.
