Anyone in Cincinnati? Need help w/a purchase.
Good morning, C&Vers.
Some of you may have seen my posts on old Triumph bikes -- looking for them, or asking for opinions when I managed to find one for sale. Previously, my attempts to either get a response to my inquiries or win one at auction have failed. Recently, I found a private seller with both a mens and a womans available--both reportedly in fairly good condition (certainly in good enough condition to restore one with parts from the other and make the second a longer-term project if nothing else.) Frustratingly, the seller is in Cincinnati area (Milford), doesn't use PayPal, and is not willing to deal with shipping the bikes himself. Might anyone here be willing to help out? I'd imagine a time convenient to you could be worked out (maybe this weekend, or the next?) as the bikes had already been for sale for a few weeks when I found the seller. I have UPS/FedEx account numbers if anyone is able to pack up the bikes themselves, otherwise maybe you could take them to a LBS for shipping service? I'd also appreciate advice from anyone who has completed a sale/purchase this way before. |

I used to live in Cincinnati, whatever that is worth... I would suggest calling bike shops in the Cincy area, asking them if they will pick it up and ship it to you for a fee. I'll bet they would do it for a fair price. Here is a link to some shops in the area: http://findbikeshop.com/areacode/513.htm Milford is kind of out there. I guess Jim's is pretty close. Montgomery Cyclery is a big one (or it was 10 years ago), and it's not too far away. Good luck. p.s. 3rd week in a row the Bengals did not lose! Whodey! |
Make him an offer he can't refuse.

I sold a bike to a guy in CA that I didn't want to hassle with shipping. He called a few local bike shops in my city, gave me a choice of 2 that would ship and cut a separate money order to the bike shop that was selected. It worked out well all around.

Call Jim at Jim's Bike Shop---513-793-1163. He's not too far from Milford, knowledgable, and pleasure to deal with..

While we are at it, can anyone send me some goetta?

I found a place nearby the seller called Bishop's. The seller knows the shop owner personally, and is willing to take the bikes there. I've emailed the shop, hopefully they'll be willing to play middleman
for this one. If that doesn't work out, I'll try the suggestions above. Thanks! |

OK, you've piqued our interest, so enlighten all of us non-Ohioans. What is this goetta stuff?
|
It's not an Ohio thing, it is a greater Cincinnati thing. If you travel 50 miles outside of Cincy, the people don't know what it is.
Off to work one morning, I stopped at a restaurant for breakfast. I couldn't have been more than 50 miles out. Me: I'll have the two eggs, choice of meat breakfast special. Waitress: The meat? Me: Goetta. Waitress: What? Me: Bacon. :( Basically, it is a pork sausage made with pinhead oats and seasonings. The pinhead oats add a texture unlike any sausage I have ever had. But, it really is indescribable. You need to experience it yourself. Goettafest is held by Glier's, the best goetta ever. There is another goetta festival also. That's right, it is so good that we need two festivals! |
Hmm....
I can find my way around a kitchen. Does this seem about right? GOETTA2 qt. cold water 2 lb. ground beef 1 lb. ground pork 2 c. pinhead or steel cut oats 1 med. minced onion 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 1/2 tsp. sage 2 bay leaves Use heavy pan! Break up meats with fork in water while beginning to boil. Add all other ingredients cook stirring often at least 3 hours in large heavy pan or pot. Goetta will be thick when done. Pour into loaf pans. Cool before refrigerating. After refrigerating to set, slice to fry. |
About right, but I don't use the beef, just pork. I've made it a couple of times using a crock pot. Turns out pretty good. Once you refrigerate it, slice it kind of thin, maybe 3/8" then fry it until it is crispy.

Gliers uses both beef and pork
Cincinnati had a huge German population around the turn of the century and goetta was like a working man's sausage. Don't use oil in your pan when frying. |

Ahh, The Winking Lizard, pretty good eats and a huge beer selection.
