80's era Peugeot "Orient Express" that is currently stripped down and waiting for me to decide what the heck to do with it, Tange Tubing, lugged construction, rear derailler hanger.

Early 90's (??) Raleigh USA "City Bike", Raleigh 502 tubing, use it from time to time on local "rails to trails" areas.

I'm part of the minority here that prefers old mountain bikes to road bikes. I second the notion that we could use more MTB threads around here--although I sort of like having the "Show us your vintage mountain bikes" thread as a sort of central repository for pics.
Someone else mentioned this before, but that thread should be a sticky.

...And this thread's woefully short on pics. Here's some random grabs from my files:

The Klunker is where it all started. IMO they're still the best. Nice bike BTW.

I would watch ebay, especially at this time of the year, for a Nishiki Ariel. The Nishiki Aliens are a much nicer bike, but sell for very big bucks. I've seen them sell for $400 plus shipping. Also the Alien is made of aluminum. There have been several honest sellers on ebay, disclosing cracks in the frames. That said, yeah, I'd like to find one in good shape for cheap.
Ariels are steel, sell for much less (frames sell for under $100) and are more plentiful. I've seen some ready to ride bikes going for just over $100 plus shipping. One nice thing about the Ariel (I think the Alien is the same) they have 1 1/8 headsets so you can replace the threaded headset with a threadless, buy a nice used suspension fork and you've got a great MTB.
I haven't pushed the Ariel hard on trails. But I must add here it handles like a dream, very stable. It was a real surprise compared to the older, standard frame Ariel.
I have no experience with Haro models of elevated chain stay bikes.

I have to agree. His stable is nice.

Vintage MTB collecting is a lot of fun. Maybe it's the lack of Campy components, but vintage MTB's don't seem to be as expensive as road bikes of the same era. They're also easier to come by. CL always has a few nice ones every week.

I am building a semi-vintage MTB frame for some light trail riding. Based on a Dirt Research frame with Columbus tubing from the 1990's. Hard tail, no suspension fork...

My last real MTB riding was done back before there were purpose built mountain bikes back in the 1970's.

My primary bike back then was a 3 speed with 26" wheels on a cantilevered frame, with banana seat and rams horn bars that took me over more rocky terrain than I have ridden on in the 30 years since my parents sent it to the dump when I was in boot camp.

Here is my Miyata Elevation 8000. Bonded Titanium Frame Mixture of Lx and Xt Equipment. I have since removed the front suspension and put the original Fat Max II rigid fork back on. Of course I added a NOS XTR headset while I was at it. Please Excuse the slicks as I was using to pull the kid trailer on the MUP.

I still wish I had my old Giant Boulder from the late 80's. It was orange and ugly with a replacement chrome fork (bent the original riding in Colorado) and a mixed bag of components from Deore DX to Mountain LX. I let it go at a garage sale during a period in my life when I was no longer biking or into bikes. If I found that bike again, there is no telling what I might pay to get it back.

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming you're the frequent poster over at MTB review VRC forum. You're a wealth of information.

I use 4 of them (each geared differently) for Singletrack/Offroad Mtn Trail/Gnarly stuff only and 1 as my dedicated foul weather bike and the other half dozen for goofy stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZtlvoQyxeI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQwbugzbKSE

Most of my Tange and Ishiwata GT's are on the MTB thread, M400, M600, several Cannondales, Handmade Stumpjumper M4 is my most serious machine dedicated for offroad, Schwinn's, Panasonics... I am rarely able to ride rigid/rigid anymore and tend to offroad with Hardtail FS rigs....

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...+panasonic+mtb

I've been wanting to film my fun times in the mud on Lookout Mtn, CO but I don't have a camera for my helmet...

Well, some were, many were alu front triangle with a bolted on steel rear triangle while others were all steel (Tange Prestige I think).
Really not a good way to build a bike frame. Lot's more cutting, mitreing & welding producing a lot of heat affected zones and a flexy design. Lot's of the elevated stay bikes broke.
The Yeti Ultimate was probably the best of the lot.

Wow, there are some real C&V MTB fans here! Alas I can't include myself in that number although I have the '94 Parkpre Pro 825 pictured below. When I ride my vintage road bikes I'm usually by myself or on a casual ride with friends so the technological advances of the last quarter century don't matter so much. For MUP or fire roads I take the Peugeot UO8 with cross tires. When I hit the real single track it's usually with friends who are all on the latest and greatest stuff and I need all the help I can get to keep up (somehow it seems most of them are 10 years or so younger than me and the ones who aren't have mad skills so...). Anyway, here's my sole entry (my other MTB is a 2000 Marin dual-suspension with mostly XT kit and a SID fork):
