How many C&V MTB's
 

How many of us are C&V mountain bikers? I see a whole lotta road bike action goin on but no MTB's. Who's not afraid of taking their toys in the mud?:D

I'm allergic to falling. I do have a 10+ y.o. Trek MTB, but I use it for riding trails and dirt roads - not for anything technical.

It sees less than 150 miles in a typical season.

I have never ridden off road much other than down the gravel driveway on my old, cheap Costco mtb to get the mail and newspaper. That may change, though, because I just picked up a yellow Trek 800 Antelope for $20 and am on my way home to clean it up and see what I have. I may just end up riding this with the kids more often than one of the nicer road bikes.

I primarily ride off road. 25 miles of trails only 200 yards from door!!!!

I count as one. I have gravitated more and more towards playing around with old MTB's more than old road bikes.

1986 Raleigh Portage-- to be converted into my grocery getter.
1991 Trek 830-- to be converted into my winter town bike.
1991 Bianchi Project 7-- to be used about town and on trails.
1991 GT Karakoram-- used mainly about town, but will be kept for trail use (i.e., the knobbies stay on this bike).







Oops, totally forgot about the pair of 1988 Trek 850s I have in storage, waiting to be converted into a pair of touring bikes. :lol:

I've got a really early Bianchi Grizzly and a GT probably from the late 80's or early 90's....I luvs me some mud! I can rarely find someone to ride with though.....

Oh please, get started. Not enough MTB action in these dignified vintage boards. If you list yours, I will list mine.

My one & only Schwinn is a High Sierra with BioPace and rollercam brakes. :p

My favorite is the '86 C'dale SM700 26x24

The "beater" is an '88 Fisher AL-1.

Under California Penal Code, that's 3 bikes, ... automatic life sentence. :rolleyes:

i've got a 20 year old cannondale SM500 and a 16 year old specialized rockhopper comp. how's that vor vintage MTB???

I have an '85 rockhopper, which is my newest bike

If a 1992 and a 1994 count (both Trek 950s), then I guess I am a MTB C & V'r.

At the same time, those are the "new" bikes in the fleet.

I'm glad you asked! First two photos taken at Harris Lake, Hogs Run mountain bike trail. The frame on the first Nishiki is a NOS, 92 Ariel, elevated chain stay. Check out the period correct, rebuilt Scott, Clark Kent suspension fork. I know, you've gotta be nuts to take a NOS 92 frame on a MTB trail, but hey, its a mountain bike.

The second Nishiki is my 1988 Ariel, pictured here with an upgraded, vintage DuoTrack front shock. I ride this bike on sand/gravel MUPS. But I used to ride it on MTB trails only three years ago.

No wonder my beloved turns a funny shade when I start talking about bikes...

July of '82 Stumpjumper, hotrodded with bullmoose handlebars, otherwise stock, stock, stock. Except for the tires, I just can't find the original tires anymore.

87 Ritchey Ultra. Cool Rasta paint. Waiting for Vantage Pro rims to fall from the sky.

88 IBIS SS. Pretty much stock; it has one of those cool springy stem suspension thingies. Bullseye hubs.

'91 Klein Rascal - Lives at my mother-in-law's house, so I can entertain myself when we visit. This was my long term race bike. Still killer to ride, although I gotta rebuild the Judy, as the elastomers apparently melted in the Arizona heat.

'91 Paramount - I bought it still in the box, from a dealer in Florida that had lost it in their warehouse. Still has the hang tag, and I haven't ridden it yet. I have a buddy that used to race on this bike...I'm waiting for him to cave and buy it for mucho dinero...

(?) '91 MB-zip - this one is in construction, waiting for a few pieces (anyone have the Mavic chainrings that go on the triple?) I need to build the wheels, and make some decals, as a meatball previous owner powdercoated it red. When the decals are done I'll have the only red MB-Zip in captivity.

'93 (?) Russ Denny Fuso. I dunno the exact year, but the frame, finish and paint are just unbelievable. Waaay to nice to ride in the mud. This one is XTR, with Topline cranks, Nuke Proof hubs, and most of the syncros bits, because there is a syncros sticker under the clear coat.

2006 Stumpjumper FSR Pro. A sweetie, not stock. The bike for the rough stuff.

And, in my mind, a Maverick Durance. Duc fork, in carbon, please.

Fixing up an 85 Ross Mt. Hood as we speak.

I currently ride a "vintage" titanium Dean Colonel that hails from 1994. I built it up as a Single Speed with Eno Hubs this year.

And, I just fixed up my old 97 Trek 830. Rigid, so it's old school :) Dirt drops, Suntour barcon shifters...


And...

I just picked up a rear wheel, Farmer John tire, and chrome bull moose bar tonight. I love vintage, but I also love my 2002 cro-mo Surly Instigator :)

Here is a list of the some of the more interesting ones:

-GT Tequesta. Complete and stock.
-GT Outpost. Winter bike with studded tires, fenders, and granny-fixed gear. (come on snow!)
-GT Unknown. All chrome. From before they went to triple triangle. complete and stock
-Haro Impulse. Raised chain stay. complete and stock
-MB-1. Complete and stock, but in pieces. Need to get this one going again.
-Klein Pinnacle Elite. Fixed gear with Eno hub and skinny slicks. Weighs almost nothing.
-Rockhopper. Powdercoated, braze-ons removed, fenders, fixed gear. Awesome utility bike.
-Stumpjumper. Modern 1x9 XTR drivetrain and huge Big Apples. Mucho fun.
-Cannondale Alpine. Could be a nice bike, but components are poor. Complete and stock.
-Slingshot. Bareframeset. Not sure what will come of this one. But neat.
-A handful of other late 80's framesets: Marin, Scott, Mongoose, Cyclepro
-Does a Bridgestone X0-1 count as a MTB? Have a frame and sort of a fork.

Man Roccobike......I gotta say that is one sweet ride! I love the elevated chainstays.....I'd love to find an old MTB frame with that design. Anyone care to name some other MTB's with elevated stays so I can start hunting?

mb-2. don't ride it much as i'm too lazy to make the bars fit me better. duh.

Count me in too - I also love trail riding - both double track and tight technical stuff. I got into it fairly late so the MTBs I ride are newer (mid-late 90s) but the spirit is there!
