Oh, and I had a little accident on the BG trail - a tiny lapse of attention saw me go off the inside of the trail and into a small irrigation ditch! My speed was near zero mph by the time I went in (hard on the brakes) and the ditch was pretty much dry. Sideways endo, no damage to me or the bike. Kinda embarrassing, though

Actually, there were a few witnesses - they asked if I were okay as they passed - but I didn't look directly at them as I confirmed I was in one piece, so yeah - it never happened

Took a few miles on the rebuilt drop bar High Plains for a shakedown run. Nice!
few little things to tweet before I try a long run to the In-Laws up the road in New Bern 37 miles away.
Then the remainder of the summer is saddle time.

Not much to write home about but this is a pretty regular ride of mine that I enjoy. Side streets, through the park, and down into the valley. Then change it up a bit heading back home.

Took a ride out to Richmond, BC this weekend and I must say, the West **** Trail to Steveston makes for a great gravely alternative to Stanley Park (far more open space, far fewer mobs of pedestrians!) I went with a friend who wasn't keen on riding on the way there so we put the bikes on the Canada Line skytrain and got off at Aberdeen station:
Saw some public art at the initially paved head of the trail:
It winds past the UBC Boathouse (hosting many a wedding), the Richmond Oval from the olympics, and some scenic vistas of the marshlands, river, and mountains beyond:
The majority of the route is gravel and very flat (as would be expected at a river delta):
We said hello to some cows who were being fed fistfuls of grass by eager wide eyed children:
And finally made our way to Steveston Village, a quaint historic fishing village with famed fish & chips:
Though we went for pizza instead:
We realized the sun was getting low in the sky, so it was time to get a move on!
Though we still stopped for a few final photo ops before racing the sunset back to the skytrain station:
Hidden benefit to cycling in the marshlands at dusk - you can outrun mosquitoes! All the pedestrians we passed were slapping at their arms, but we managed to escape with perhaps just one bite apiece.
For those in the area, it's about 24km there and back on just the trail itself. Flat and easy so good for families, and would be nice to combine with a ride out from Vancouver if you're looking to make it a longer distance trek with a pizza or fish & chips reward at the turnaround point!

The Family took me camping over the weekend, so we packed bikes with us. Got out for a short trail ride one day. It was tougher on the dog, than any of us.

If you're riding straight from Vancouver, there's a pedestrian-bicycle bridge at Cambie to get across the river.

I'm really loving this bike. I bought it while nursing a broken hand back in late February and it wasn't until April or so that I was able to start taking it out. Originally I thought it was maybe a little tall and something I could flip for a profit, but once I swapped out the pedals and got saddle height & angle sorted it became my preferred bike for commuting and pleasure riding alike. It's not going to win any races but it feels comfortably sure footed, and when you get up to speed it really cruises. My friend riding with me on her knobby tired mountain bike teased me when we were making our way home on the trail. "This isn't even work for you right now is it? I'm pushing hard and you're just having fun there out-pacing me without trying!" Hope you can get yours repaired or that another one comes your way some day.

It was a beautiful day Saturday August 22nd
Then I rode to Lake Redman and did some significant climbing.
Coming down the rocky west side of the mountain my rear tire flatted.
I was thrown sideways, what would have been off the side of the trail and over the edge.
Fortunately, I fell into a tree, which kept me from going way way down.
When I got off the bike I realized it was the flat that had caused me to loss balance.
I felt better about it then.
I had to carry the 30 lb bike the 2 miles home on my shoulder.
Should carry a spare tube & air stick.
