….which I did! It was a LONG day in the saddle, over 100 miles. The last 30 miles were on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. I got home around 10 PM under the light of a nearly full moon

Mrs non-fixie and I are busy preparing for this summer's C&V events. In a couple of weeks we need to be ready for the Retroronde and Eroica Britannia, so our bikes need to be sorted and we need to be in shape. So we did a 70k ride today, through the 'green heart' of Holland, which is the rural area between the four major cities in the west: The Hague, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam.

Mrs non-fixie is very happy with her Mercier, I, OTOH, haven't decided yet which bike to take along. Today I tested the Vittorio Strada:

Ridewithps says we rode 17 (scenic) miles yesterday, but I see GPS errors, and I think it wasn't quite that far.

We rode our tandem, which we've been riding occasionally for about three years. We're still learning and getting used to it. My hope has been that Carol will have an easier time at it, since I'm stronger and have more stamina. That is coming true, but it's also coming true that I'm finding it more challenging than riding a single bike, so 17 miles is a lot for me on the tandem. I was tired afterwards, and I was sore this morning. Then again, we were towing some serious weight.

And hey, we averaged 11 mph, at least 1 mph faster than all of our other tandem rides, so no wonder I was tired!

We towed our trailer and carried some stuff to the dump. Then we went to the hardware store to buy a couple of gallons of paint. Then we went food shopping at the High Falls Food Coop. Then we visited the antique flea market where we saw this old bike.

Oh man, @non-fixie - you are KILLING me with that bike. I could step right on and ride it, set just the way I like the bars and hoods - probably no adjustment to the saddle for 70k. Looks like my Blackburn pump, small saddle bag and single water bottle. I'd need a spare tubie.

Some great photos these past days! @northbend, looks like a lovely trip to the islands!

I started out at 6:40am and stopped at Starbucks in Kingsburg for an americano at mile 12.7. I had some tasty little peanut butter and cream cheese sandwiches on homemade sweet bread my wife packed and had one of those right off the bat. From there I went to Starbucks in Kerman at mile 47 for another americano and a parfait. At mile 67 I stopped at the Mendota Wildlife Area and then went a bit further - it had been six hours of leisurely riding and into the wind and several stops by then.

On the way back I turned south to go through Tranquillity, where I stopped for a tasty asada taco lunch at mile 79. I rode non-stop until I got back to the Kingsburg Starbucks for a protein smoothie and iced coffee at mile 123.3. I zipped home and added a couple miles to the route, coming in at 6:10pm after 138 miles. I stopped about a dozen times to answer nature's calls, take photos, and eat sandwiches... Altogether I was in the saddle about 9.5 hours, and had a negative split of nearly an hour. I am beat!

Highlights included checking out the gas station with a Douglas SBD dive bomber mounted on the roof, watching the birds on the water for a while in Mendota (including a pelican and a pair of grebes), and admiring the abandoned silos in the little town of San Joaquin. The west side of the valley is a rather desolate place, and I went twenty miles or more at times without passing anything except fields and farm houses.

Thank you. (I think...). Saddle is an Idéale 90, at 80cm (89cm/35" inseam). Pump is an SKS and the bag contains my favorite mini tools and a spare inner tube. I never carry more than one bottle, and never anything else than water. On longer rides I generally make sure there enough restaurants, or at least shops, along the route. Not a fan of astronaut "food".

Places never seen are always worth a look, IMO. Planning first cycling trips to Normandy (oysters!) and the Peak District (Bakewell Pudding!) in a few weeks, and really looking forward to them.

Yesterday (the holiday), my wife and I visited her mother who lives just under four miles away. I'm proud that my wife took the initiative to say she wanted to ride there and back rather than drive or take the subway. She says she doesn't ride enough, and this time, she was ready to ride.

The Portage is the one that came on 650b wheels from the factory, right? I thought about doing that conversion with this bike, but the 700c x 35mm tires feel just right. If I decide I just have to have fenders on it, that is still an option. This is the bike I would ride on a long, multi-day tour. It's surprisingly light, and rock solid with a load. Raleigh did this one right.
