A little bit of gravel riding today. I took a side road to check out Buck Mountain Ford. In the increasingly less common dry spells in summer one can drive across it or tiptoe with your bike, just getting your feet and ankles wet. After the last spell of downpours, about 1.5 to 2 feet in the middle today. Our new subtropical climate gives us drenching downpours every few days and I wonder over the long term effect on our dirt roads. People will either need to spend more money dumping new gravel more than once or twice per year, pay for paving, or be content to drive/ride/walk on washed out badly rutted roads.

35.5 miles out to Montage Mountain and back, north through the communities of Pittston, Duryea, Old Forge (The Pizza Capital of the World), Taylor, Scranton, and Moosic. Forgot my better camera, so all I had was my cell. Great day for a ride!

Saw Iron Maiden here in 2000.

Skiing in the winter/Sliding in the summer

He was about 3ft. long

Time to go back down

One of my favorite quick out-and-back rides is the Bay Bridge trail. It was also a chance to get the Competizione out, which has been a little neglected lately.

They made a park out of a couple of supports from the old, demolished Eastern span of the Bay Bridge.

Yesterday rode the 1st annual Tour de Lewis, Lewis County NY, metric century.
Around 100 riders.
It includes a lovely category 4 climb and lots of rolling hills.
Finished in just over 3:10 or 19.6mph, not bad. It was a beautiful day and a great ride.
Today 25 mile recovery ride...my legs are a bit sore.

Is that a high normal front derailleur? I have same looking set up. Used to live in Oakland while at Cal, but bikes back then got stolen day one

10 miler around downtown Dallas with my friend after about 2 hours wrenching earlier on his bike.
Very nice bike wrenching / riding day!

Shot toward downtown from pedestrian/bike bridge over the Trinity River.
Margaret Hill Hunt bridge for auto traffic with tall span is in shot.
Today I rode my recently built up Bridgestone CB Zip that I'm running Rat Trap Pass tires on.
Sweet ride!

Memorial Day Ride
Attention Seattle area folks, the Hyak Tunnel is now open for the 2022 riding season!
Hyak Tunnel is open for 2022
I rode up from my house in North Bend on Memorial Day.
Memorial Day ride
Riding up on the Iron Horse Trail through occasional mists, the clouds hung low hiding most of the views of the surrounding mountains.
Early on I had my doubts it would stay dry
Trailside Crucifix near the snowshed
Railside Crucifix
A healthy Lunch on the Patio at the brewery on Snoqualmie Summit.
Pit stop at DRUBRU on the summit
Return via the Old Snoqualmie Pass Road
Heading down the Old Snoqualmie Pass Rd
Still a little rough down by Denny Creek by Matthew Pendergast

I cross over I90 and continue the descent on Tinkham Road that parallels the Freeway. That forest service road is kind of ugly, pockmarked heavily with water filled potholes but I find it fun to ride. A bit like playing the old video game "Asteroids"
I climb the McClellan Butte Trail to get back to the Iron Horse Trail. Then the usual route back home from there..

As mentioned elsewhere, was trying to ride each of the bikes during Bike Month and today was the Paramount's turn. Today was my birthday and I rode alongside the g5yo twin down to the school where she will attend kindergarten in the fall, past the tennis courts, past the pirate ship playground, through the secret passage, back past the school and her best friend's house. Maybe but probably not two miles. It was great.

For a variety of reasons haven't been on the bike much lately but got out for a hard 20 yesterday. The beautiful spring weather window between lingering winter wind and cold and summer tropical hot came and went in early May in a now all too familiar pattern. I got a late start yesterday by which point temps already around 90, so I did my first run for the hills and drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was still hot and muggy but bearable up there. I can already tell this summer, I'll have to drag my ass out of bed early AM to beat the heat.

Raven's Roost - elevation 3200'

Bike gods talked with weather gods and arranged for the storms to hold off until I got back to the car. Made for a cooler descent as well as a little motivation to up the pace! This is the first pullout at north end of BRP - mile marker 0

Snuck out after work for 57 miles over to Deerfield. I usually only head that way on weekends, but a key bike path connection going north is closed (probably til next year!) for a rail bridge project so I need to find alternative routes.

Had to get creative to find a loop home. Checked Google Earth, which pointed me to a sidewalk in a subdivision leading “nowhere”.

which turned out to have an “enchanted bridge” over the Skokie River.

The “river”

Back in civilization, “Food Truck Thursdays” are happening again. Some kind of blues band w/fiddle.

National Doughnut Day
Took a ride to the local orchard for their cider doughnuts.
There were two problems with the ride.
#1 I decided to ride single speed on my Trek Multi-Track. 48-17 led me to walking one hill, sure I could have shifted but why be old if you can't be a hard head.
#2 They ran out of doughnuts before we made it to the counter.
Only doughnuts I saw today were on my son's jersey.

Think this might have something to do with the sellout. Not there for traffic or crowd control.

From yesterday's 22 miler. Was taking it easy with a sore knee and lower back. Couldn't have asked for nicer weather - clear, 70s, almost no wind.

Mrs non-fixie and I decided to go for a ride today. The weather forecast looked good and she wanted to test a knee she'd hurt a couple of weeks ago.
There was a fair bit of wind, so we decided to go inland a bit. We ended up south of Apeldoorn, on the edge of the Veluwe national park. Nice roads.

I didn't feel like mounting the hitch rack, so we took bikes that would fit inside the car, i.e. without fenders. She brought her Zieleman:

And I took the opportunity and brought a bike I hadn't ridden in a long while. My Nöll. I had forgotten how nice that bike really is. The long-ish rear end makes it feel very sure-footed.

We ran into a railway crew preparing a local track for the tourist season. As of next week there'll be a steam train along every day.

This should be lovely later this summer, when the heather turns purple.

Zooming down these lanes was a treat.

Just did my normal route today but rode it for fun vs a workout. Took out the new to me Coppi again. Really liking the bike so far.

View from the bike path

Local Reservoir

Oldest, still operating, saloon in Utah

Today's ride was not C & V but was steel!

This for sure is a classic, WOW!

Snowbasin MT

This section of road is pretty much traffic free. Sometimes I just ride a 7 mile loop here for a full century since there's no real cars to deal with. The views keep the ol' brain stimulated.

Cows and a barn

Barn

The TV show Yellowstone filmed on the road in the background going up that mountain. The take them to the train station scene, LOL!

Shelter Box ride/race today in Henderson Harbor NY.
Over 150 participated in the varied rides.
I participated in the 52 mile timed event/race.
Finished 11th out of 25+...not bad at all for a 66 year old...the "fast boys" were very fast today and the wind was hellacious at 16+mph steady with up to 30mph gusts...a couple of gusts blew me several feet to the side...sometimes it's not fun being 67kg...142lbs...but it was great fun with great people.
