Nice weather today, so mrs non-fixie and decided to go out for a leisurely ride. A mix of woodlands and urban scenery.

Boring ride today, crashed a week ago and had to lay low a bit. Got out the battle wagon with new fenders and new B17 to break in. Nice to not have filth flying off the tires for a change

I was in Colorado for the weekend and took a ride up the Crystal River to McClure Pass. Non-CV gravel bike but I was thinking of my CV bikes when I was riding.

Hah, no pole dancing for me. The last 2-3 miles are pretty steep and I was pretty sapped by the summit. I don’t ride that bike much and didn’t realize that I still had one more lower gear left til I topped out - doh.

I thought the sign was unusually high too. Looks like it used to be much lower from this google image. The highway department must have wanted to provide sticker slappers a bit more of a challenge.

A beautiful and dark 55 degrees in Portland. Did the usual ride, but a maiden voyage on the overhauled Bruce Gordon.



Boy, that's an ugly seat. I rode by this broadcast tower bunker a couple of days ago, and noticed the new paint. Perfect backdrop for a purple and yellow bike! The sun even came out for a sec.

I was able to get in a long loop of 40 miles yesterday in plenty warm temps up to 97 degrees at the end from northern part of Dallas to Whiterock Lake, then downtown with a portion passing by the big Eye, the JFK Memorial and old Texas School Book Depository with the infamous 6th floor.

My wife and I rode the Lehigh Valley Gorge Trail north from Jim Thorpe. Next time we will take the bike train up, which takes you about 25 miles upstream and it's smooth coasting all the way down.

"Ride" may be too big a word for the two or so miles I managed to squeeze in just before dark on my latest frankenbike. A build to try out a few things at the same time: a much-abused mid-eighties Koga-Miyata Randonneur frame set, a pair of new and very cheap wheels with a hub generator, a pair of Maillard CXC pedals, an Andel 3-pin compact crank set and a pair of 8-speed Claris brifters.

Not so much me, but where and what my son rode...

Thomas has ridden to school a handful of times this spring, on his MB-1. He is the only kid out of about 500 students that rides to school. Well, last night I pulled my Gitane off the hooks and dropped the seat some. Low and behold, he can actually fit one of my bikes(smallest one that I ride). His backpack is down from about twenty five pounds last week to a more manageable seven or eight(turned in the school laptop and comp books for the year). He said bike handling is much better because of that.

Anyhow he rode the 72 tdf to school today(older than most of the parents of his classmates). Its only a 2.5 mile ride each way, but he is happy to get out and pedal at 6am. The mustache bars were something to get used to, but he thinks the bike is pretty cool.

The custodian saw him pull into school this morning, and was nice enough to suggest that he park in a hallway that only the staff uses. Three more days of school, today probably being the last that he'll get to ride a bike. Time to spool up that Alice Cooper tune...

Mid 70's and nice so took the clunkster Stone Grinder out for a ride. Turns out the national bike tour comes through fairplay today so had to stay off bike path and main trail. Just no reason for middle age guy to beat some riders over heart attack hill.

Happy birthday and congratulations!

Attaining 71 years of age and riding 71 miles are both remarkable accomplishments in my view and even more so done in combination.

Last November is the last time I rode 70 miles.
I hope to try again when mid 90's and above temps go away this autumn.

Your doing something right to still be able to do this.

A bit under the weather still today so I took the 37 year old Raleigh Team USA out for an easy 30 miles. Weather and light kept changing throughout the ride but I still grabbed a bunch of pictures.

My rain bike is enjoying an extended season! I was riding all of my little gravel side roads, pretending that I live in the country, and thought that a community garden would be a good spot to photograph a British bike. The bucolic backdrop is deceiving, though; I could hit Interstate 5 with a tomato from here.

Spaghetti Legs 

Well happy belated birthday Dean! I like to ride my age on my birthday but had decided at some point (likely well before 70) I would either do that in km or 100-age miles.

I just spent a week in Southern California with the only bike riding a beach cruise along the Manhattan Beach strand. Luckily, the SoCal weather followed us home to Virginia and it’s been warm, dry and sunny. Today was maiden voyage for my early 80’s Merckx Pro which, interestingly, of the 3 I have owned, is the first one with Columbus tubing. Rode around town today as the legs were tweaked from a hard ride in the hills yesterday. Almost 5000 feet of climbing over the two days.

... the rear tube on my Dawes went "POW!" and I walked after that. Actually, I walked a mile or so, then Ellen picked me up with the car.



The tire is a brand new Swift Sand Canyon. I presume it was intended for hook bead rims, and that the Dawes has straight beads. In my defense, this happened earlier on the ride, I let out enough air to reseat the tire, then walked to a nearby bike shop and squirted in about 40psi of air. I kept the pressure down because I figured I was dealing with a hooked/not hooked situation. I didn't have time to check it out when I got home because I needed to pack to go out of town. So I brought my Eisentraut instead.

I rode this bike with some cheap Schwalbe's with no problem for several years and just replaced them with the Sand Canyons a couple weeks ago. Maybe the extra width was a problem. The Schwalbe's were (I think) 28mm. The Sand Canyons are labeled 37, but they really are only 31mm wide when inflated.

When I get home in a week or so, I'll scout around for some more modern 27-inch rims. I have no idea what the current rims are, but I suspect they are original to the bike.

Sunday ride with a friend that I gave my Giant Acapulco beach cruiser to many years ago around Cape May Point NJ.Back in the day a group of 5 or 6 of us would rent a Summer house in Avalon NJ and the Giant was a cheap grocery\bar bike.
