The final ride of 2022, one that started wet and got wetter. Nice weather for ducks and submarines.
Its not a real submarine obviously but its known locally as the Camberwell submarine and you can see why. It's actually home to some heating plants for the council houses nearby.
Just as soggy in the financial district.
The final piece of new street art I've spotted in 2022, this one by Dan Kitchener. Appropriate its raining in the image too.
Rain in the UK is hardly newsworthy, its been falling on our heads on a regular basis since records began. It seems fitting that I stop for a pic outside James Smith & Son, makers of fine umbrellas for nearly 200 years now, who must have been rubbing their hands with glee today at today's weather.
By now my socks and shoes have been overwhelmed by water, a day for rubber boots, or Wellington boots, or wellies as we call them. Named after this bloke, the Duke of Wellington, who was famous for handing Napolean a beating at the battle of Waterloo in addition to popularizing the welly.
For kings and commoners alike it was wet here today, Buck Pal, everyone inside hammering Netflix today, but probably not the Harry and Meghan thing.
On the plus side all the rain does make for some nice bright reflections from the lights at Piccadilly Circus.
And the final pic of Westminster Abbey, the rain now so heavy you can barely see Big Ben and London Eye in the background.
I ride the final few miles home apologizing to my Italian bike for the conditions and making it come out today. There's nicer days ahead........in a few months time maybe.
The final end of year stats are in. I cycled on 339 days out of the 365 for 2022. Of those 26 days of the year not cycled, 7 were enforced family gatherings with no cycling opportunities, only 1 day was missed due to snow and ice when there was no salt on the roads, and I didn't cycle on one day with over 60 mph winds which I deemed too dangerous. I cycled all year in the UK in temps from 23f to 104f which was officially the hottest UK day since records began.
Final mileage for 2022 was 10,246 miles, and I climbed an elevation of 329,693 feet, so 2022 was my highest mileage ever in a year. 94 more than I managed in my previous highest mile munching year of 2017. And all this in the year I turned 50, so there's hope for us old dogs yet. That makes it 60,205 miles cycled in the last 7 years since I started tracking every ride, and for that I am going to have an extra big bit of cake in a vain attempt to line the stomach ahead of the end of year festivities.
May your 2023 cycling smiles to miles ratio remain high, and may you magically remain puncture free. Well we can dream can't we.

If I calculated correctly that averages to 30 miles per ride.
Impressive!
You only beat my 2022 miles by a bit over 4.3 times as much. I think the most I ever rode in a year was 4000 miles when I was a lot younger and 2500 of that was a 52 day bike tour loaded to the gills.
This particular picture of the bird man reminds me of the 'Home Alone 2' movie I watched again last week.
There is a bird lady that helps out and befriends the main character young boy.
She has lots of pigeons around her most of the time and they play a part in helping the boy towards the end.
I wonder if the pigeons prefer Marin bikes?
Zooming in I see that's the brand of his bike.

With rain forecast for all day today, I got my last ride of 2022 yesterday, a 20 mile suburban and MUT round trip between the storms. I retired at the end of 2021 and this year rode more miles than any year in the last 40. Fewer long rides but more days riding.

Unbelievable. I somehow succeeded in getting my currently-very-moody 13-year-old daughter on the back of our tandem for a hilly ride in 42 degree drizzle. It was only 7 miles and 700 feet, but I felt like I got a good workout hauling 100 pounds of teen angst up that climb. Photos would have disrupted the delicate balance, so if you super-impose this pic over scenery from my last post, that'll about do it. Happy New Years, everyone!

Starting 2023 with another unseasonably warm day today in the Boston area. Yesterday I fitted my Ti bike with fenders for the winter slog, and today went with a friend to ramble through the arboretum.

I had to work yesterday and not able to enjoy unseasonable warm and sun, but it held out today so waved the Stars and Stripes.

Headed out for a few warm hours today mixing urban, suburban and rural on this near modern-day classic. Down Under in the southern hemisphere summer it was perhaps 25 degrees Celsius but the sun gets pretty harsh without cloud cover. Threw in a cursory ten-minute effort for old times sake.

I tried. The Ironhorse trail had all the gates locked. I'm guessing they are discouraging the campers until the next few storms pass. This area was pretty trashed up when I rode through before Christmas. The shoreline cleanups will be busy on the bay.

20 test miles late this afternoon (my first ride of the New Year) on this:
Evaluating this:
Longer 120mm 1R stem mated to a wider CdM bar - and the stem even has a bit of a drop. First impressions is the steering feels just a tiny bit slower, but I'm also feeling things out, so... Shellac will probably go on this weekend - I want to ride it a bit, kind of patina the bar tape before I put on a protective coat. If that makes sense.
This bike also has a new, low-flange rear hub built into the same rim I was using when the original Hi-Low hub failed. This replacement is somehow not lining up in the same way as the Hi-Low, and a normal 6 speed freewheel fouls the chain ever so slightly against the inner dropout in the stand. I added a single washer and re-set the overlap on both sides to equal, just barely getting the gap I need. But the drive train isn't shifting/running as cleanly now. I have some tweaking to do - exactly what test rides are all about.

Here in Virginia, the warm weather stuck around for yet another day, so I was able to get 40 miles of gravel goodness in on the VO. Right around the curve in the second pic, I came across an occasional riding buddy, except this time he was on a horse! Great day for horse and bike riding.
Bleak House Rd. Toughish climb to get up to this point but I’ve yet to find any sadness here
