Just a few from last weekend's Audax ride - a 120km calendar event this time. North Bristol into Gloucestershire and back, going over Haresfield Beacon and Frocester Hill. Haresfield Beacon has a stretch of 25% ascent, so I rode the Motobecane 15 Speciale which has a triple (and I needed it!).

24 mile ride to Red Feather Prairie which is an area of tall grass restoration north of Des Moines. It's beautiful in the fall when the colors change. It has a dirt path running through it so I took my '73ish Motobecane Grand Record which I have set up for light off road riding with 700 x 35c Schwable Mondial tires. You could see a storm coming so I had to ride tempo to get home before the rain. And I had a mechanical on the way home as the dang chainring bolts fell out; that's an embarrassing first! Luckily I found the parts for two of the bolts, tightened them up and stayed in the big chainring all the way home. Now I'll need to hunt around for the bolts for a 50.4 bcd pattern crank before I can ride that bike again or install a different crank . . .

Ride on the Pinarello. I live on an island, so I always see water on a trip. Well, almost always. This is one of the smaller harbours (we've got plenty!), with beautiful old boats, and I passed a bridge. They're working on it, so traffic is slow. The view is great!

This morning's ride was to investigate the status of the pathway through Dreamy Draw in northeast Phoenix. The path runs near the SR 51 freeway but generally on a separate alignment along an old roadbed, and is an important bicycle route connector between the northeast valley and central Phoenix. Unfortunately, this path has been closed for the past couple years for construction of a large-diameter water supply pipeline connecting two water treatment plants (one fed by Salt/Verde river water and the other by Colorado River water). Yesterday, they did a soft reopening of the path and today I got out the Raleigh Professional Mk IV and headed down to take a look.

The pah itself is still a mess and under construction, but is fully passable. The southern segment is again using sawcut concrete construction, which makes for a smooth ride. But the area isn't all that photogenic at the moment, so I crossed the freeway over the Mercury Mine School bridge to have fun on the... unusual... ramp connecting the bridge to the frontage road below.

But the Pro handled it like... a pro.

Yard/Garage sale touring with my kid. A few of the neighboring communities held their annual garage sales this weekend. Thomas and I mounted bags on bikes and 'went to town'.

All of the good stuff must of been swept up yesterday. I bought five vintage 🪨 cds. Thomas was eyeing an Xbox, but it was gone when he by the time he was ready to throw down the green.

Still, was good to pedal around with him.

Coupla notes: Clips and straps are not going with me on my next garage sale tour.

I am happy to live where there's no HOA...

This weekend started on a sad note. I've missed the Lake Pepin 3-speed Tour again. This time it was due to lack of funds, a result of 11 months unemployment. I've been employed for a week now, Quality Manager at a wiring harness manufacturer, however that first paycheck is still two weeks away.

But when Saturday dawned with clear blue skies, I had an epiphany: why not do my own nationally-inspired ride? The Lake Pepin Tour is all about English. My ancestry is French. I have a wonderful old 1984 Peugeot Canyon Express mountain bike ready to go... Allons-y! (Let's ride!)

I stopped briefly to visit with a denizen of the deep, muddy Mississippi.


He wasn't the only urban wildlife out and about on this gorgeous afternoon.


This curious fellow showed no fear whatsoever of me and my Leica.


I put 33 miles on "Betty Bleu" today. Although quite comfy, she is also quite heavy. I felt every mile once I made it home.


My lunch stop was at Salut, Bar Americain. No photos of my Hanger Steak and Frites, I'm afraid. Hunger made short work of those. Here's a nice shot of my crème brûlée dessert, though.


Almost home, Betty Bleu triumphantly perched on a local monument.

I'm sure my fellow Gentleman Cyclists enjoyed their day on the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin. But I'm also sure the meal I savored at Salut was quite a bit nicer than the mushy peas and shepherd's pie at their English event. French cuisine beats English eats every time.

Last weekend, it rained.
Yesterday, rained morning, afternoon it let up but the roads were too wet to ride and cycle around.
Yeah, Japan is a wet country.




Azaleas
Azalea's season is almost over, its last stage.

Its beautiful wall, white plaster and dark gray tiles, low stone wall and azalea hedge.

The next natural beauty to azaleas is hydrangea.
They look like petals.
No, they are calyces.
The flower is the center dot of 4 calyces.

For us Japanese, ajisai is the symbol of tsuyu, rainy season.
We associate ajisai with rain and umbrellas, at once.

Humidity was high but the temp was 25c/hi80F, low enough.
It's still a good weather condition to ride a bike.

Bumped into some east end girls with both swag and swagger.

I've cycled many 1000's miles across this city, but before today have never burst out laughing at the sight of a barbers sign, and had to pull over and take a photo

Today was the Storming of Thunder Ridge ride down in Lynchburg. This spends some time on the Blue Ridge Parkway and includes the 12+ mile climb up Thunder Ridge to the summit of Apple Orchard Mountain. Summertime heat and humidity have usually settled in by this point and the finishing miles of this ride are usually in brutal heat and humidity but not so today as we had a slight chill at the start and gorgeous mid - 70’s temps at the finish.

I really wanted to ride vintage this year but a few days of poor sleep had me worried the legs wouldn’t be up to the task so I took the cheater bike.

Nice easy Sunday ride on the bike trail about ten miles on the Marin MTB. Nice weather but a bit overcast with hazy air from the fires in Canada looks like another Summer of poor air quality. at 10,000 it kinda takes the fun out of riding a bit.

I enjoyed a 34 miler on my Bridgestone CB Zip today in temps from 72 to 75 with a light north wind which is pretty mild for this time of year in Dallas,TX.

I haven't been riding much lately, but today I was able to get for for 50 solo miles. I started northward on the SF Bay Trail and before crossing the long Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. From there I headed south toward Tiburon, a charming and very expensive community on a peninsula that juts out into the bay north of San Francisco. Once on the peninsula, I incorporated the popular "Paradise Loop" (on Paradise Drive) into town and around the peninsula before heading back home in Berkeley. It was a gorgeous day to be on a bike!

I did get a slow leak on one of my beloved Veloflex tubulars around mile 40, but a few squirts of Stan's sealant and some pumps on my trusted ZefalHP, and I was back on the road without any further issues. Now off to enjoy some beer, bbq, and basketball.

Took my recently restomodded '97 Bianchi Campione D'Italia (does '97 count as classic/vintage? It was 26 years ago...) for a quick lunchtime 6-mile ride down to a nearby park, where a neighbor enjoyed a lunch of three fish, snatched from the water and swallowed whole, while I sat and watched.
