Still getting beautiful days here in the PNW (see Roger's pic above). Did about 30 miles or so over in my old childhood stomping grounds today.

Had a great ride today. Some of you know I spent a large part of the summer recovering from a couple of herniated discs, turns out the C5 and 6 are real common for cyclists to put out. Anyhow, that's mostly behind me now. I've been able to do up to 6 hour rides now and experience only minor lingering discomfort. Read up on cyclist neck pain if you're over 40; it's a real bummer and easily preventable with the right exercises and setup.
I have been doing small projects getting all my bikes up to snuff, the L'Eroica Colnago finally got a SKF BB and new yellow bar tape, along with some maintenance love. I'd been looking for a chance to get her onto some bumpy stuff...
So, I got assigned to a protection detail tonight and thus my whole day became free. Voila; an opportunity to explore the local C&O river towpath past my earlier forays. I headed upstream to mile 25 before turning for home, with leaves just starting to fall from the trees and almost no path traffic. I need to take more days off mid-week!
Enough blather...to the pics:

It was a very, very nice and unexpected ride. A good prep for my plannned leaf color ride in a few weeks, I hope to head from DC to Harper's Ferry (about 60 mi one way), meet the Sgt Major for lunch and head back.

I wouldn't mind a link of two regarding cyclist neck pain. I'd be all up on any/all exercises and whatever else. These days my back is doing much better, but I note shoulder and neck pain are at a premium after anything over 30 miles as of late. Glad you've pretty much gotten over it yourself!

Thanks for the comments DD. I don't really have any links, but if you google cyclist neck pain and C5/C6 disc issues you'll get plenty. It turns out this is super-common and is caused by looking up for hours on end, squinching the discs of the C spine area. Mine came on suddenly but no violent cause; just an early season long ride that doubled my routine mileage. That, and ignoring the pain until it got so bad I couldn't drive and had to take 3 weeks off work. It finally made me see a neurologist when my hand started to go numb. All it needed was rest and a lot of PT, they showed me tons of good upper-back and shoulder stuff you can do to strengthen the neck core muscles and upper back. I do some weight and strength training, but like most I always ignored the upper back and neck in favor of pushups, dips, curls etc... That all strengthens the front and pulls the shoulders towards the front, which all makes a herniated C spine disc likely. Combine it with spending 4 hours or more basically looking up the entire time and you have a sure-fire recipe if you're predisposed to this injury.
I was out for a total of about 12 weeks, and all I could do for exercise was walk, even running jarred it too much. Extremely frustrating, but another reminder that late 40s aint the mid 30s. We have to really train smarter, not just ignore signs of injury and figure it'll heal on its' own. It won't.
Now I balance out my routine with upper back and neck stuff, and on breaks I squeeze the upper back muscles in an isometric to relieve the built up stress there. It really makes a world of difference, and now at the end of a ride like the one above I just have some really mild neck pain. I'm definitely increasing in slow increments though, 3 weeks glued to the couch is not something I want to do again.
Oh, and the 'Nago just loves gravel paths. Those wheels that Sugar Wheelworks built me are a dream, and are shod with the Challenge original Parigi-Roubaix's in 27 mm. I run them fairly low PSI, probably about 70 or so. It just sticks to the ground like glue that way. I have yet (fingers crossed) to pinch flat, although I hit some good roots and unseen rocks today that I was sure would leave me trailside doing a repair.

Same ol' routine ride today. This time on the heavy (yet, sturdy and comfortable) Peugeot touring hybrid.

Nice pics all.
Today I took off work to do one of my favorite routes that goes along the Mississippi river for a stretch, then up some valleys.
Nice to see sun after a few cloudy days:
A look south down the river, and the nuclear plant steaming away
Usual photo stop
A look up the Trimbelle valley
Cross traffic

Great set of shots ChromeMolly! I'm loving that we finally have some cloudy cooler weather in DC as well. I've had it with summer.

Thx. Glad you are feeling better and riding again. The ultra distance cyclists have to construct neck holders so their necks don't implode after days of riding.

Nice pic, nice riding, guys. I just rode my commute again today. We intend to take the tandem out tomorrow though. Temps should be in the mid-60's. Where did September go???

Well, as it happens I somehow came to be 63 years old, living in a tiny town of 600 people, and my fixie has brakes; so I don't think I can claim to be young, urban, or hip...
But I can pretend, so I rode the fixie to the bakery for coffee and a pastry.
On the way I stopped to shoot the bull with some old friends who are still into the Black-and-White scene:
Some new graffiti in the 'hood.
Breakfast!
My apologies for the blurry photo... must have been too much coffee.

Happy birthday, OBH! Nice rides and pics, all.
My sweetie and I took ye ol' tandem out today, 51.6 miles. Mostly roads we've ridden a lot lately but I took us on a few alternates we haven't done on the tandem. Stopped early to buy broccoli and some oriental greens I can't spell. Stopped later to buy some bananas. (What's with all the stopping at veggie marts?)
In Concord we encountered what looked like the end of a ride of the Wounded Warrior Project. Lots of bikes. Took no pics though, unfortunately.
Coming down Strawberry Hill we noticed a sign we had apparently passed but never noticed before, the entrance to Concord's Annursnac Conservation Area.

It looked enchanting so we dared to enter the woods, even rode a bit of single track.

Single track on the tandem sounds like fun Jim! Sitting here having coffee waiting for the temp. to go up a few degrees (it's 48) before I head out. Hopefully some pictures to follow later on. Cheers!

My daughter had a cross country meet about 25 miles from home, so I rode down to watch.
The Sammamish River trail was the most direct route to the race. Couple spots on this trail reeked of sewage, BAD...
The start of girls JV race. My daughter is the one with a dark blue shorts and a ponytail.
I took the long way home and headed out towards the Snoqualmie Valley.
In all, it ended up just shy of 70 miles. Good fall ride.
