Riding between Riegelsville and Frenchtown today:
New Jersey pastoral.

Vacationing on the Big Island, feeling guilty, so time to saddle up and do some suffering.
Total time and average included stops. It seems that 10 miles in an hour is my rule of thumb for any longer ride. I'm just not interested in hammering the whole thing out anymore. The roses smell too sweet.

I mentioned that to my wife today. She said I'd have to ride back, because there was no way she was driving over there to pick me up. That stopped me from thinking about it.

One of the "just for fun" things I like to do is ride around in Portland proper. City riding is a great way to sightsee. I can only imagine what riding around New York is like!

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I give a nice tour of Manhattan on foot or on bike, whichever you prefer, and I'll make you dinner, too, so consider yourself welcome.

If I ever get back to NY, I'll take up that offer in a NY minute!

Went for a beautiful but cold ride yesterday. The sunset was as per norm beautiful from Gerlisberg. My toes and fingers were a bit frozen but the ride was really gorgeous. Most folks are comfortable at home or abroad so the streets were nice and quiet. I really had a good ride. And of course, I didn't bring the action camera on this particularly beautiful one.

Nikorod and I got in 20 miles of single track today. He on his 1993 Trek 950 and me on my 1989 Trek 950. Got some funny looks out on trails! It was a mix of mud and slightly frozen mud, things got slippery near the end of the day when things started to freeze up again. Not too many pics as I was way too tired and it was way to slippery!

One more ride on the Big Island before flying home tomorrow. This time I headed south on the Queen K. Highway, then turned inland and uphill towards Waikaloa Village.
A few miles longer than Christmas Eve, a few hundred feet less climbing. A similar ride, but a lot less trees, more shoulder, but more cars. At one point I looked up and saw the peak of Mauna Kea. I briefly thought about heading that way, maybe 3 seconds total.
Instead, I took the roller ride to Waimea. Somewhere in between, it started to drizzle. It seems that it's always raining in Waimea, and always sunny where we're staying, even though it's maybe 10 miles away. I was actually glad to feel the rain this time, I'd been climbing with no shade and 80 degrees for about two hours. Once in Waimea, I turned left and did the same exact descent as before. This time I only hit 42.
Go to Hawaii, bring a bike!

33 miles at 23 degrees today. Intended to head down the gateway trail into St Paul, but would have needed studs for the many glare ice sections. So, I only did a mile or so of that. The rest was mainly a shoulder of the road affair, still much better than an indoor trainer. Definitely feeling the difference in fitness between early fall and the end of the year. Not out of shape, but way off peak... Oh well, maybe that will become motivation starting on new year's day...
Tried out the chemical heat packets in the shoes to combat frozen toes. They helped for maybe an hour which is better than nothing.
A ride outside takes the edge off nicely, and has improved my winter mood substantially.
Two photos; one of some tubers enjoying the day, and another from one of the rougher stretches of todays ride.

I took my Moto-Bacon out for its maiden voyage on Wednesday -- just a short trip around the western Portland urban sprawl, highlighted by the Fanno Creek Trail. The first few pics are Woodard Park, not yet on the Fanno.
The thing many people don't realize about the PNW is even when it isn't raining the roads are usually wet.
This one is looking back over the Westside Regional Trail from the top of the hill where I live.
Today, I got out for another 30 miles, this time along the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway. Both of these pictures are at Fernhill Wetlands.

This being the last day of the year, my sweetie and I had to take the tandem out to hit a mileage goal. Temperature about 33degF, "partly cloudy" (meaning overcast) sky, modest wind from the west.
Our mileage goal was N + 2.8 miles. Wouldn't you know, after only 1.4 miles we decided we'd had enough, or rather that we didn't have enough shoulder to ride, what with all the ice. So we turned around. When we got back to the car the odo said 2.8 miles, exactly what we needed! Sometimes fortune smiles on you!

Nothing grand or elaborate here, just around our area for some last day mileage, 16 miles was all I was up for in the rain, and some fresh air. It has been a light rain here all day, but I was determined to get out and ride no matter the weather, just not really far.
These are my Pro-Strada after getting home this afternoon. It just received a complete rebuild, laced up new wheels from parts off the 'Bay, better thorough cleaning of each and every part of every component, Freewheel Spa treatment for the cog set, thanks Pastor Bob!

D4F, nice pic. Look like you're having some fun!
We took the tandem out again today. After yesterday's aborted ice run we decided to start closer to town and do some exploring. Rode from home in Waltham to Alewife, out the MM to Lexington. The Fitchburg Cutoff trail was okay. The MM was okay too until we got near the Arlington-Lexington line. We ended up leaving the MM and taking Mass Ave into Lexington, doing a bit of exploring northward, heading back into Arlington on Mass Ave. As we entered Arlington Sharon spotted a Whole Foods Market (sometimes called Whole Paycheck Market but we won't mention that).
Ah, right. Quick U-turn, head back uphill to WFM. She promised not to buy any more than one pannier's worth. Ah, right. We came home with some veggies and a chicken. (How do we always end up pedaling home with more weight than we started with?)
Unpacking when we got home:
25.1 miles, a very nice start to the new year.

27 miles at about as many degrees this morning. Wanted to get a ride in before the snow/rain mix that's to be followed by a deep freeze plunge for the rest of the week. Some iffy road conditions, as I ventured on mostly township maintained roads today.
As it was trash day today, I found this guy lying along the road. Apparently someone didn't get what they wanted under the tree and so Santa was tossed. He did fine riding on the bars for a couple miles (may become next year's seasonal Poprad decoration). I'll need to find him a cycling hat. Bears a striking resemblance to one of this thread's most prolific posters, I think

I have the same Intense Blue 950, same size even! Love love love that bike. It was my first serious mountain bike, bought used in 1991.

Today after we'd been to the gym and run some errands my sweetie said I should take a bike out for a spin. Yowee!
It's been a while since I took the Motobecane out so that was today's choice. About 25 miles; don't know exactly because the bike doesn't have an odo and I didn't feel like running a phone app to track the course. I don't really care how far it was, even if it means I don't get braggin' rights.
Plan 1 was to investigate some areas I haven't ridden, specifically Linear Park running northeast from Alewife. I ended up in Davis Square, Somerville. The sharp-eyed among you will spot the tandem toodling along on the far side of the street.
Somerville has lots of "official" bike routes with "Bike Route" signs all over the place. I started up that way then realized it was a one-way street and I wasn't at all sure how easily I could follow a morass of "Bike Route" signs back to Davis Square. So I bailed at the first right turn and followed roads I knew back to a road I knew.
The rest of the day was to Lexington and back. A nice day!

A beautiful day for a ride yesterday, so I took the Gran Tourisme out to see how the 700x35 tires handle the muddy canal path.
Jersey side of the river is more gravelly.
Rest area.
Lost my camera shortly after taking this shot. Realized that I had lost it once I was back home, but it was late, getting dark, and I had to get changed and go open up a jam session. During the jam, one of the gals was showing off her smartwatch and asked, "Did anyone lose a camera on the towpath today?" Somebody had found it and put it on her local community facebook page, and it went to her watch. Camera was dropped off to me this morning. What are the odds??
