Thanks, DQRider! I had help from a tripod.

bwilli88, I looked over that plaque carefully to see if there might be some of the same people involved, but now that I think of it, it seems a lot of bridges were built in that style. The grandest one I've seen in person is in Coos Bay, built in 1936. It was re-named the Conde McCullough Memorial bridge in 1947, in honor of the man who designed it. He designed many of Oregon's coastal bridges in the 1920's and 1930's. I've walked and driven over it many times, but never ridden a bike over it.

Anyway, sorry for the side-topic. "What Bridge Did You Ride Over Today?"

I recently enjoyed a coastal ride near Monterey CA on an old French bike.

1959 Terrot and "The Lone Cypress" tree on 17-mile Drive.

Recombinant DNA methods were debated here at a famous conference in the 1970s.

It can get windy on the coast!

Pavement hazard on the Monterey Recreation Trail. (Birkenstock sandal for size comparison)

This little crater sent me flying over the handlebars when I tried the same ride during a visit to Monterey almost exactly a year ago.

I was stunned to suddenly crash in Sept 2017 when cruising down this recreation trail. Last fall's ride had ended up in the emergency room with lots of road rash and a grade-4 fully-separated shoulder, followed by reconstructive surgery, 3 months in a sling, and 9 months of physical therapy to restore strength and range of motion. It felt great to now be able to ride past the scene of the accident one year later, and this time really enjoy the ride! Hang in there Northbend, and best wishes in healing and recovery.

I had three crashes in one year. My father asked me if I was doing something wrong, and I thought hard about it. One was caused by a foolish move, but the others were probably not.

@DMNHCAGrandPrix = your pics make me want to return to the Monterey Bay area. For me, best cycling location in the USA because i'm not a hot weather person. Give us more moving forward, especially if you get up near Santa Cruz. No one has posted the SC Beach Boardwalk in years.

Here's hoping everyone has a coastal CA cycling day! Ride On.

@northbend - Sorry to hear about the crash and glad there aren’t any permanent injuries. Sound to me like you exercised due caution on the hairpin and it’s just bad luck. The fresh coat of light rain had to be culprit. Best wishes for your healing up!

Heres are pics from my ride today on Skyline Drive. About 80 degrees and breezy up on the mountain, 90 and humid (still) down in the valley. The lake is Sugar Hollow reservoir near Crozet VA. Also included a pic of a variant of the Cat 5 tattoo. I tend to lay the inside of my knee against the top tube when descending fast and it looks like time and excessive humidity have loosened up the rattle can paint touch up on the Merckx.

New bales just rolled up today on my everyday route with my heaviest road bike, now more or less a trainer for solo rides. Still a sentimental favorite as it was my 1st real bike bought new in '82

Always around gravel.
Large hands & long fingers make the reach easy.
From hoods or drops.
On all bikes -

So easy on Campy 10 Ergo to switch on the fly.

edit: note long-ish stems as well. 125mm and 2X 130mm.

No separation on my vintage DT shifting bikes, strictly by th book.

I, too, took a spill this week. I had fitted some cheap 32c Nashbar tires to my 86 Passage I have set up as a singlespeed, and was fine tuning my brake adjustments. Did my usual handling test loop around the local self-storage area that is right next to my house. The area is sealed with blacktop, and it had been raining for a while. Took the first right hand turn and the front wheel just washed out from under me going 12-15mph. I hit the ground on my right side and slid for about 10 feet, banging up my right knee, elbow, and shoulder a little bit. Taught me a lot about my assumptions about traction, especially with hard, cheap tires.

Thankfully I'm no worse for wear than a few scrapes and a torn pair of jeans, and the bike is just dandy as well.

Afterwards I took a short out and back on the local MUP. It was my first ride since I got married last weekend, and it felt really great to be back on a bike. The past month has been so busy with planning and family that cycling was put on the back-burner, but even with the shorter days I'm looking forward to being able to get out a bit more.

The changing leaves certainly help with the motivation to get outside:

Out and about this morning. I did a quick 15 miles up and around the south side of Lewisville Lake north of DFW, TX near my house. The south wind was starting to pick up, as was a creaking noise coming from the left side of the spindle. Of course, it might have been me (the bike/rider combo is 95 years old). Discretion caused me to cut the ride short before I was forced to walk...

I am visiting family here in port crane ny so I brought my 97 Cannondale with me from home in locust NC. Yesterday I biked chenago valley state park. I did the loop in the park and all the surrounding roads. As a kid in the 1950’s I entered races on this same loop. We always went around it counter clock. wise. I always wanted to do the loop clock wise and that is what I did. There were two short climbs that brought me to a stop to rest. I rested and went on. Now I know why they never ran the races in that direction. I turned around and went back the other way and it was a easy ride. It was interesting doing a ride I did as a kid 62 years ago. I did win one year riding a 3 speed. Did about thirty miles which is a lot fort me these days.

I'm just going to say, 10 years ago when I moved to Dayton, I never would have dreamed I'd get back into cycling after a 25 year absence and enjoy this so much! Exercise, sunshine, therapy, not as much guilt when you eat a pizza, friendships, community support, respecting nature.....the list of the positive benefits of cycling is long!!!

Took the tandem for a shakedown ride after replacing the crank set, bars and brakes. The weather was nice, the bike behaved well, and stoker and captain are getting more relaxed with every ride.

Airborne

I did a 30 mile circuit from my home: SW to Selbyville, DE, due E to Fenwick Island, N to Bethany Beach and boardwalk and then W back to home. Rode my Airborne Zeppelin, titanium with 9 speed Ultegra. I did a quick clean up/lube job on it yesterday. Also adjusted the derailleurs and brakes. I bought this bike used last year for 6 bills and have another 5 or 6 bills invested in various replacement components. I could not be happier with it. Smooth and fast!

A month off the bike thanks to the nerve issues. However, after two weeks of intense chiropractic torture hell I have made improvements and am finding the arm numbness to be less frequent. It's still there just not as intense or as often. So, with that I decided to take the recent drop bar converted Trek 950 out for a 12 mile shake down test. Only had to deal with some minor hand tingling in the palm and some neck muscles tightening. But, overall it felt great.

The bike rides really well and I like the rando bars. Still need to adjust to non-index with the bar end shifters and the rear needs a little more trimming when shifting than it did with the Shimano LX shifters. It's a nice riding bike and pretty comfortable.

Thanks, Jim! Getting to understand tandem riding is an interesting journey. The first try was not a huge succes, to put it mildly. We made the mistake of staying close to home, in town, and all the traffic and starting and stopping was, well, no fun at all. If I hadn't kept my ground that first ride would have been our last. For the second ride we went out into the country, with far fewer junctions and very little traffic, and as our heart rates slowly went down, and we got into some sort of rhythm, we began to see that riding a tandem could actually be quite enjoyable.

This was our third ride, and with what we'd learned before, we managed quite a bit better, and actually enjoyed ourselves during most of the ride. We still need to fine-tune our (my) signalling, though.

Liked your pictures, BTW. Nice to see faces with the familiar names. Top does look like a Top!
