Took the 1953 Raleigh Sports Tourist for its first ride after refurbishing. I had to make a couple of adjustments on the ride, but happy with the results. This is on the W&OD (rails to trials) bike path in Northern VA.

BTW, I'm not 100% sure, but I think your fork is bent. You might want to have someone look at it. |
I rode a 65-70 km loop that I've been waiting for cooler weather for. Today was overcast and cool, and shortly after I got home, rainy. No pics though. This will become somewhat of a regular thing, though, so pics will eventually show up. I rode the 87 Schwinn Prelude.

Finally got the Gitane back on the road; 40 miles today mostly in Scituate RI. Thunderstorms this morning gave way to a humid, but not too hot afternoon.

Cool picture there, billy chuck! So how does the mixte ride? Does it meet your expectations?
the only problem with this one was the rear caliper was difficult to adjust, being squishy if tight and too loose (causing frame vibration) when lossened a touch. i hope the girl isn't having any problems. i probably spent way too much time restoring it. |

Looks like a nice ride. I've been on the far western edge of the W&OD trail. I like it, with exception of the many hammerheads that want to turn it into their personal racetrack. I know exactly where you took the picture in Paeonian Springs. That is where I would get on the trail shortly after I get off Clarks Gap road as I'm heading south from Brunswick MD.

Quick 14-mile sprint out to Coney Island and back, (almost) before the rain hit. Bidding a fond farewell to summer...

I managed to get three of my C&V bikes up to Hurricane Ridge today. If you're not familiar with the most famous cycling destination on the North Olympic Peninsula in western Warshington State, it's sort of like our own local version of climbing Mt Ventoux, with a no-***** full mile of net altitude gain in about 20 miles, if you start at sea level, downtown. Much food and water was consumed on the way up.
No, I didn't ride it three times myself; I brought along a couple friends. From l - r, my cousin Field, my cousin Mark, and me, the chubby little guy. (In this crowd, 6'0" and 190lb is a chubby little guy). Note the back tires of our rides are starting at exactly sea level. Taking the picture is Kathy, who escorted my Centurion Pro Tour 15 up the hill in fine style. To be honest, she kicked our asses the whole way. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...DSCF0002-1.jpg Here's Kathy goofing at the top. Holy Jeebus, check out those legs. I mean really. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...n/DSCF0018.jpg Here's the whole vintage steel gang, chillaxing while the riders tank up on post-ride fish 'n' chips from the ski lodge cafe. Decent view up there at 5,300 ft, with the weather changing every 4 minutes or so; ergo the name, "Hurricane Ridge." http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...n/DSCF0015.jpg On the way back down, there was some speedy descending, as you might imagine. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...n/DSCF0022.jpg And a view from 3000 ft or so, looking NE over the lovely Sequim valley and Dungeness Spit (Try the local crab! It's delicious! And expensive!) http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...n/DSCF0027.jpg Here's a shot of one of the tunnels everyone is required to talk about when they talk about this ride. Yes, there are three tunnels, and you have to go through them, OK? Use the elevated sidewalk on the right if you're concerned about getting hit by a car in the dark. Otherwise, put on a nice bright blinky taillight, and ride in the road. That's all there is to it. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...n/DSCF0029.jpg Here's the hardware; Cousin Mark rode the '84 Peugeot Vagabond (which I got from fellow C&Ver Mparker326) http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...DSCF0008-1.jpg Kathy rode the '84 Centurion Pro Tour 15 (which I got from fellow C&Ver Wildwood) http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...DSCF0005-1.jpg I rode the '72 Lambert frankenbike I've had for 32 years, and have recently been messing around with, including a mostly successful yet incomplete spray-bomb and an assortment of 70's - 80's -90's Japanese bits. That little hill squarely in the background is where I learned to snow ski when I was a kid. Hurricane Ridge has a tiny, perennially struggling ski lift operation which opens every weekend in the winter, weather and road conditions permitting. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...n/DSCF0019.jpg OH, and of course, no pictures of cousin Field the top, because he was trying to push his ungodly heavy giant sized Giant MTB up that crazy hill; and said 'sayonara' at the halfway point and rode home. I had offered him my very large '87 Tempo (at least 12 pounds lighter than his tank; and geared for spinning) but he's all "No, I'll be fine." Heh. |
Lcm, nice! Wish I was there.

Great photos, caveman! I love that climb

Like Ventoux. But with trees in the way. Nice pics.

Well, I did get to ride today, finally. Just 45min or so on the Blackstone Bikeway after work. It was cool, damp, nearly deserted. Tomorrow I get to do much of it again, but on my regular commute.

About halfway into my planned 40 mile ride the sky opened up. Luckily I found this restored farmhouse to hide for about a half hour until the worst of it passed( best use ever of the iphone radar app).
http://i931.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps61b95f76.jpg This restored kiln had a bigger overhang. I really need to add fenders to at least one bike. http://i931.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbade80d3.jpg |
23+ mile group ride tonight in a pretty stiff wind for half of it. 8 riders and I was the oldest (almost 48) and on the oldest bike - Spectrum Titanium. We dropped a couple of riders going into the wind which is also a gradual incline for a good 11 miles and I circled back to pick those riders up and get them back to the group.
Once we turned south and had the wind behind us the fun started. I took off with our local cat 3 racer and another guy as we pacelined at 32+mph for three miles or so. I was holding my own until the other two decided to have sprints to road signs.. Fast twitch muscle fibers is something I don't have an abundance of so I got dropped. They'd slow and I'd get back to them and off to the next road sign they sprinted. The fact thst I could hang within 50 yards or so was gratifying. All in all it was a fun night for my second time with the group this year. |
I see some more great pics of great rides :)
Caveman: Hurricane Ridge is now on my Bucket List. I can't believe I've never been up that in all my years in WA! I got in 28 miles this evening. Dark and spitting rain, but not enough to wet down the tarmac, so I didn't have a big clean-up job at the conclusion. Bonus. The ride was memorable in that it was my first halfway-serious mileage on tubulars for the first time in over a decade. Scozim: who needs fast-twitch muscle fibers when one has a lightweight wheelset with tubs? These things wound up something fierce, but the real benefit (and revelation) was the ride-quality. While only 23mm tires, it felt like I was riding on a cloud. Fantastic! I'd like to say I'm a convert - until I flat one of these babies... For now, however, I'll just be over the moon about it :) DD |
Took the day off to get the kids back to school. Nice cruise along the Manasquan River on the Land Shark...met the wife at the River Rock for lunch and a Magic Hat #9 . Excellent day at the Jersey Shore.

We moved into Manhattan last week. Yesterday was the first day I rode my bike to get somewhere. I rode along the Hudson River Greenway. It's very narrow and requires quick wits, but man, can I go fast! There are almost no stop lights or signs. This has been around for a few years, but it wasn't here when I last lived in Manhattan, so the speed was astonishing. I accidentally overshot my destination, because I wasn't accustomed to the speed. I still got there early.
Today, I met rhm for lunch in midtown. Riding in midtown traffic at midday requires an intense amount of attention and energy. I'm not used to this, even though I had my wits about me. Now I see why fixed gears are popular here. It gives that much more direct and minute control of speed. |

However, if you don't have them, get yourself a pair of tiresavers ($10. ea) In this photo of my rear tiresaver, one thing you can't see is all the tiny marks on the tire from stone chips--- each tiny hole is a reminder that the tiresaver works to save your tire from flatting. PS: caveman, thanks, fantastic photos! |
I did my 27mi round trip commute today but with a minor twist. I took a different route up from the Blackstone River because I wanted to get some pics of something I discovered a few weeks ago. Of course I had to grind up a short 12% grade on this road. Not to be outdone by JJScaliger or photogravity, I offer these pics:
http://users.rcn.com/jimmuller/pics/...graveyard1.jpg http://users.rcn.com/jimmuller/pics/...graveyard2.jpg I couldn't read all the names and dates on this one: http://users.rcn.com/jimmuller/pics/gravestone1.jpg This one reads Joshua Turner Died Oct 4, 1863 Aged 74 years, 4 months & 16 days He rests from his labors http://users.rcn.com/jimmuller/pics/gravestone2.jpg Then on the return home I had to take this pic, the bike and the MBTA commuter train: http://users.rcn.com/jimmuller/pics/bike_and_train.jpg Whodathunkit? |
^ Wow, a perfect color match! :)
