The daily high temperatures were hovering around 60 degrees the week we were there with lows around 50 -- perfect for summer cycling! In around Toledo and Siletz it got into the upper 60's and I had to take off my long sleeve jersey. ;)

The lack of temperature extremes is very appealing, and like you said, perfect temps for summer cycling. Here in the valley, I've been doing early morning rides to avoid the heat later in the day. You do get a fair amount of rain at the coast in the winter, but it tends to move through pretty quickly for the most part, rather than hanging around forever like I does in the valley with the inversion layer. And you get some pleasant surprises at the coast, too: occasional shorts and t-shirt weather (well, at least for me—my wife says I'm a furnace) in January.

Not far.

Hot and humid.

I decided to get some overdue maintenance done in the cool basement versus the longer ride I’d originally hoped for. That led to a short test ride on new to me wheels for the RockHopper. The originals were questionable with the amount of wear on the brake tracks.

These are 9sp XTR hubs with double butted spokes to lightly worn Mavic X517 rims. Sweet pink anodized nipples accenting that 90s flare. I’m continuing the 7sp setup with a cassette spacer for now, and will end up going 9sp at some point on the horizon.

New tires with latex tubes are part of the package. Today’s ride wasn’t one to base any opinions or comparisons on, but it was definitely promising (as expected). I’m certainly looking forward to pushing these around the woods soon. :)

And really, who doesn't like sweet pink anodized nipples? :D

Sorry, had a Beavis and Butthead moment there. Carry on.

For my birthday I'd wanted to do a century on five different bikes; I got 80% of the way to my goal but ran out of daylight :)

Started with tubulars and some tight gearing:

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4776c4fffe.png

Then it was more tight gearing, a different saddle, a flat, a walk to get it fixed....

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...76b3100239.png

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8bc0344f1c.png

This one was reliable and fast and perfect for getting to the 60 mile point:

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...232986d215.png

And lastly, I saved my best-geared bike for what I knew to be the finale. I only just got home as it was getting dark:

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a1d46f342c.png

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4250c6a170.png

So basically I spent my 58th riding a bike all day long; no complaints :)

Edit: I am seriously in like with the image quality of this newly-acquired SD 790 IS. Hopefully I can be more careful (dropping my 520 HS set it on the road to ruin) and get a long life out of this one!

today was the first stage of Tour de Status Symbol Land. Not to hot and moist and only few Weekend Squires out mowing the lawn. I spent a lot time in the big ring for some reason, the gearing is the same as my other bikes, I guess I just in the groove.

I was busy admiring Mrs’s Gray’s blooming roses and I missed the cut off for the MUP, so I had to hoist my Specialissma X9 Campione del Mondo Titano over this guardrail. I am therefore calling this a cyclocross ride! :p

55 miles and 3800' yesterday.

A bit milder 28 miles today.

Nasty humidity and hot the last few days, though.

At mid-season, I feel like I've worn a groove in all the usual routes. Today I decided to check out a new "loop within a loop" that I discovered on Google Earth. The loop seemed to dead-end at a major highway with no way to complete the last leg.

From the satellite view, I could see a trail that went through a wooded area, with what looked like bridges crossing RR tracks and the North Branch of the Chicago River that would allow me to close the loop. Bridges are circled.

When I arrived, I was happy to discover that the wooded area was the Mellody Farm Nature Preserve - public land! I was initially worried that the land was one of the many estates in Lake County. In this case, a former estate turned over to the public. Here's an old bridge.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a877e538_k.jpg

The trail was crushed limestone and easy to navigate, even with 700x23. Here's the second bridge crossing the river.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4b9c9602_k.jpg

All in all, I was only on the trail for a quarter mile where it spits out in a sub-division. Trail narrowed a bit at the end, but was still easy to ride. Totally worth it, since it opens up some new routes.

Very happy to find a new loop! Ended up with 64 miles on the day.

I needed to take my black and yellow Colnago out a lot over the last 2 weeks. Today was a fast 40 to Portola Valley and back to celebrate the end of the TDF.

Took just a nice short Sunday ride local ride around Fairplay on local side roads and trails. First nice day without bad smokey air or thunder storms in several weeks.

Had a great little tour out into farm/wine country this morning. Ended up at the funky little store Hopewell Hub (who are also customers of ours) where they were kind enough to open two hours early so that I might purchase an espresso and scone. I was sitting in the shade enjoying my treats when a fellow pulled up in his C&V GMC pickup truck, and asked me where I was riding in from. Told him I came in from West Salem, and he was excited to check out my Peugeot and talk about bikes. He then clued me in on some of his favorite quiet back country roads in the area, so I ended up extending my ride out further than originally intended, which turned out to be really pleasant.

After 21 straight days of riding I took Sunday off, then got back to it today with 30 on the Colnago. No, the route's not as steep as it seems in the first pic :)

Damn that sucks about the only solace is it's a out side spoke always suck when you have true bike fail on the road.. Had one this week rear DR odd brake fail and 2 spokes .

BFisher 07-20-21 07:43 PM

Today was a Colnago day for me as well. Not very scenic, unfortunately, as we are getting some thick haze from those horrible wildfires out west. Did stop to snap a pic, though.

etherhuffer 07-20-21 07:46 PM

I always buy about 3-4 extra spokes per wheel. Saved me waiting for a DT in the mail. Also, reminds me to choose one spoke brand to stick with. More compatibility. When I went out yesterday it was a little creaky at first. At least that was better than the guy I ran across on the trail who broke his Orbea derailleur hanger in half!

Spaghetti Legs 07-21-21 12:29 PM

Been a while since I've posted. I've been riding, but not as much as normal. Took the Carrera out today and as the sun climbed in the sky realized that it's not morning haze but smoke, presumably from the Oregon fires on the other side of the continent. Even on the muggiest of days the Blue Ridge stands clear in the distance but barely visible today for most of my ride. This pic is about the only somewhat clear view as the mountain is only a couple of miles away.

Happy Belated Birthday to Drillum Dude and all you other July guys! 53 in one week for me but alas, I'm working that day so the birthday ride will be rain checked.
