Here's three bikes that were heading for the dump. The Gran Rally (light blue) originally had sew-ups, but the rims were destroyed. The Centurion was sold on C-list, the Viscount (red) is listed but being ridden while I can. The Univega Gran Rally is now a 16 speed with Mavic rims & Ultrega hubs. Just might end up keeping it. These bikes remind me how good an old classic 10 speed can be. The Gran Rally is in a different class. Full Shimano 600. .

Our CL here in STL is a pretty good one. Just barely not enough of a bike town that bike prices arent crazy high, but there are plenty of them to choose from. PLus you can almost name you price when you re-sell something

In the past few months I have bought and sold :

Klein Custom - Bought for $45, sold for $400

Schwinn Paramount Series 7 - $115 sold for $285

Nishiki Prestige Proportional - $50 sold for $225

Trek 412 - Bought for $50 - Sold for $150

Centurion Sports Dlx - Bought for $80 sold for $150

I am currently riding this, Its to nice to flip and I bought it for $65

Boy, they sure put that maintenance handbook to good use huh? Lets see... Step one, extend seat post. Step two never clean your bike.

That GB stem is *****in, I like the cable stop on it.

all original save the derailleurs and shifters, front is Campy as are the shifters and the rear is a Shimano Crane.
Brooks seat is pretty dry, maybe I can bring it back to life some how, gallon of
proofhide maybe

Nothing fancy. I found this Schwinn world today at a rummage sale, the handlebars are what attracted me to it. It's a bit dirty but otherwise in fantastic condition. I think I can make a quick and cheap flip out of it. There was a much cooler GT there that I wanted for myself, the price was good but I couldn't justify it.

With a little TLC this can be a really nice bike for someone looking to start riding again. I doubt that the bars are original but I think they are perfect for it.

Surprisingly all the bearings and races are in fine shape, it was well cared for up to a point then left to deteriorate. I think it is going to clean up pretty well after the oxalic soak and a lot of polishing of aluminum bits.

I think the fork may be saved. It's more bendable and could be straightened. Make a jig out of wood, and realign the fork blades. The bend appears to be after the crown.
That's a cool CCM crank!

That crank and gear system is weird, one arm has alot of play in it and it's tight, the single is a triangle shape lol. and shifter wont shift into high gear. I plan on fixing the forks and trying to bring the bike make to normal, I believe it was Red and Gold or Green and gold , it's been repainted a few times.

It is a great bike. Im just working out a few kinks.

There are a few chips that have minimal rust on the bottom side of the top tube. other than that, it had been in a shed for 16 or so years so it was just dirty.

WNG, how can one make a fork jig? I'd like to. Refer me to something online, or I can start a new thread or something.

Tom,
Someone made one to align his fork on the Mechanics Forum. He used carpenter's laser, U bolts and plywood. He realigned the fork blades with it. I don't recall the thread name.

That would have been me. I had to improvise a bit to get my fork and frame straight after tangling with an oncoming car last year.

This was the thread

Just read the other thread, that is the feel-good home bike repair story of the century. Amazing. You could have been killed or injured in this wreck, but instead this was the result. Wow.

Was mowing the lawn last Friday, and looked over just at the right angle, and saw an old road bike wasting away behind the catty corner neighbors house behind me. I was like WTH, and I just got rid of my old binoculars a couple of weeks ago. The grips had turned gummy, sigh.
What I can see is black paint, no turkey wings on the white hooded non aerobrake levers(Shimano or DC, not sure), toe clips with straps, dark looking rims, dirty white wrap. Looks like a Schwinn of decent quality, although the stem is obscured from view. Given the no turkey wings, it probably has DT shifters. At least I hope it does. I took a walk over and a woman in her mid 40's answered the door. The bike was her Husbands
old bike, probably from about the time they met, hehe. She said he would probably be tickled for me to have it, but maybe there's some sentimental value there. She took my name and number, and said it may be tomorrow before they call.,,,,BD

Got my fingers crossed that it's a decent bike, and he wants to pass it on.

Got a pic... Might be something a little less spectacular. Looks like long reach brakes, and stem shifters the camera caught better than I did. Oh well. Should make a decent trainer bike for my nephew.

Well, was I thrown for a loop or what? It's a 24" wheel Raleigh Capri, 410 tubing and steel wheels. Yep, it was free. Can you get 24" tires still? It might even be too small for my nephew, since the top tube hits me right about knee height. One pretty cool bonus though? It has Shimano 600EX Triangle pedals, with steel toe clips in good shape. It will clean up nicely, mostly rain/tree dirt, and not a lot of rust.,,,,BD

Do they make 24" alloy rims?
