If the bikes are selling for $200, doesn't that mean they are worth $200? Just because it isn't worth that much to you, doesn't mean they aren't worth it to others.

High prices are the norm in most bike hotspots. You just need to catch a deal at the right time if you want a below market price on a craigslist bike. You don't see low prices on lots of bikes because those are the ones that sell... the ones you see listed above what you think they are worth likely aren't selling and that's why they are still listed.

This has to be one of the "all time" best bike forum threads. It amazes me as to the great bikes you guys find. Hell, that Campy Record seatpost on the Masi is worth over a hundred bux. I guess I need to get up real early for those tag sales if I want to score like you. My best CL find, and only, is a '87 FAT CHANCE KICKER I got for a good price. I did go look at a low end Pogliaghi, but that thing was very rough.

Well, I had my best garage sale weekend in several years, while on vacation. So the van is now loaded, way loaded.

Pretty much any time I go on vacation with the car, I bring home bikes. Some of my best scores have been outside my area, on vacation.

Picked up a nice late 1980s Panasonic DX2000, a 1984 Schwinn LeTour Luxe, a Masi Gran Corsa, and a bike workstand. Then later I added a Raleigh mixte to the load. This is on top of the three bikes I brought along to do some riding, along with luggage, etc.

The Masi has unusual (at least to me) Bullseye cartridge hubs. The hubs are even color matched to the bike. It has mostly tricolor components, with a couple of Campy parts in the mix. Bike definitely needs major TLC. Naturally, the stem is stuck on it (a nice TTT, hopefully I can save it). All of the rest of the seat posts and stems are freed up and cooperating well.

The Panasonic was in the best shape. Please ignore the oddball angles on the handlebars. I was in the process of changing the orientation of all bars so I could squeeze seven bikes in the car. All bikes came with pedals, they were all removed to allow for loading as well.

FWIW: All the bikes were picked up at noon or later, so the local scoopers had plenty of time to bag all of them. Not sure why these bikes were still around. The Panasonic was even listed in the garage sale ad: "lightweight Panasonic racing bike", and it was marked with a very attractive price. I went back to the same town the next day (I was short of time), and that's when I bagged the MASI and bike stand....

Wow, that is nice. Are those the wheels it came with? I like the "pop" of the headset.

If you have any more of that green housing, the rear derailleur housing could be replaced. It would really "pop".

The problem with the green housing is that it is lined brake housing, so I figured it would not work with the Dura Ace STI. I did order a couple of lime green bottle cages, might keep the yellow one where it sits (yellow painted area) and the green on the green painted portion. The wheels were Ritchey C/L pickups, I got the bike without wheels (seller wanted a fair amounf for the wheels, which did not match, were in mediocre shape, and neither was original).

Yes, that's a red (deep red) Chris King headset. Picked that up years ago, came with a Look Bernard Hinault frameset. Stuff tends to work its way around my workshop. Figured it matched the red contrast on the fork crown, and the red head tube decal. That is one smooth headset. The original tricolor 600 HS was tired.

I'm thinking of pulling those Mavic decals off the fork. I understand they are not original, and nothing on the bike is Mavic.

Thanks, that MASI was in neglected condition, stuck stem (had to cut it out), broken spokes, rusty components, etc. But the profit on the workstand I picked up with it covered the MASI and the workstand, so it was a good day for sure. MASI is waiting for my next frame rust campaign, I need to get one going.

As I pointed out in my message, I did not get to those sales early at all. All three bikes were purchased at noon or later, one was DAY TWO of the sale. One was even clearly listed in the garage sale ad: "Panasonic racing bike" and it was priced low, really low. I was driving into town that day, so I got there as early as I could (started the day just north of Louisville, KY). I was sitting in my motel the night before, looked up garage sales close to my destination. Pretty frustrating, as I knew that Panasonic was going to be long gone. Had I been in town, you bet, I would have been in that guy's driveway at 7AM or earlier. But I took a 10 mile detour, just in case...

Why it was still there? Crazy. Then I picked up the Schwinn LeTour Luxe four blocks away, garage sale on the main drag, bike was sitting in the front, near the street. It also had a low price. All three were in neglected shape, but the Schwinn and Panasonic had excellent frame/paint/decal condition.

Geez, I went to probably 15 sales yesterday afternoon, during one of those community-wide garage sales. I should have known better; one of the less prosperous communities in the area, high unemployment, low income, limited disposable income. Nothing but junk. Some Huffys, Magna, and a Ross, PASS. I bought a half round file and yet another Scrabble board, $2 total.

Garage sales yesterday, no bikes (thats the norm). Did find a huge amount of painting supplies cheap (I will be painting the outside of my house shortly). Also picked up an unusual Seiko watch for $2. It had a dead battery. Looked it up on ebay. If it runs, they are going for $500 to $800, for parts, they are going for $75 to $100. I was hoping to just have a cool looking watch to replace my beat up, cheapie Casio. Well, that's not going to happen.

90% + of my best garage sales scores are not bikes. If I was just looking for bikes, I would have given up on garage sales long ago.

Great find Sixty Fiver. Thanks for the details. I have a Raleigh Twenty I really dislike. I haven't souped it up yet. You probably remember my mentions of it in the past. Maybe I'll work on it eventually.

We have to have a folding bike to ride the commuter train during rush hour. I've taken the Twenty a couple of times, but it's not a lot of fun, and it doesn't fold well at all. It takes up so much room I usually have to stand with it or over it for the whole ride.

Bill,
I agree, but I do have this thing for tarnished metallic objects! While not exactly a garage sale find, (craigslist what else?), similar bike reconditioning techniques like knowing how to clean metallic bits, where to get parts cost effectively, and prior wrenching experience allowed me to acquire this Viking Range, all in including new parts, for about 10 cents on the dollar for a new one. This range looked like the homeowners never cleaned it. Putting the drip pans in a self cleaning oven took care of the baked on grease. Already put in new igniters, a spark module, and just need to change the propane orifices to NG.

Of course, if cruising in my Mini Cooper S, it's hard to bring stuff like this home!

Terrific score on that Viking stove, WOW!

Yes, once you start looking for deals, its amazing what you will find, most often, it will not be bike related. Found a bag of oak outlet cover plates, with brass screws, at the pound store today (overflow from the Goodwill, everything sells for $1.10 a pound). Needed three of them for outlets in my hardwood floor, instant improvement. Cost me less than 20 cents. Also found 3 cashmere sweaters (they will go to ebay), and a lot of other stuff. Also picked up a commercial grade clothing rack for my wife's clothing business. No bikes of course.

Recycling is cool!

How much for the Viking, shipped to 02135? :) Awesome score. I keep my eyes peeled for one even though it will be a few years before I buy a house. I prioritize a nice kitchen over bike storage/workshop hands down.

And I like that you refer to your car as a "Mini Cooper S"... A good friend of mine's father has one and she told us that when he bought it, he told her "...and when you tell your friends what I bought, make sure to tell them it's the "S" so they don't think I'm a Patsy".

There is a 6 burner on the cape for $1200, very clean, but the add is 2+ weeks old.

Picked up this beauty from the original owner, who at 70 decided he wasn't going to ride it anymore. As usual, he was a very interesting fellow and we spent about an hour chatting. It's always great fun to hang out with other bike nuts!

I like the Alpina Pro. Almost bought one back in '91 but purchased a Trek 970 instead.

1992 Paramount Series 5, 1988 Univega Alpina Pro, and who knows what year Raleigh Super Grand Prix.

Gotta love the Paramount came with two Paramount logo bottle holders.

Stopped by the LBS on Friday the 13th looking for an upgrade for my 13-year-old Nephew. He is really digging riding now and the 1980 24" Schwinn youth Varsity (Sprint) is now a little small.

So I quiz the manager and he shows me this 1983 Nishiki Olympic 12 that he traded for that morning. WOW! It is brand new! There is not one single scratch on the paint. I just can't believe how perfect it is. Must have hung in a garage all these years?

He asked me if I wanted it as-is for $100.00 and I jumped on it.

The original tires were thread-bare but I had an almost new set of 27" Bonetragers. (Yes, I know I didn't get the label aligned with the valve stem on the front wheel)

I switched the stem out for a shorter one and moved the DT shifters up to the stem as this is what he is used to and likes. I changed-out the pedals as he is not ready yet for toe clips and straps. He still prefers pedals that are the same on both sides. Added a kick-stand as well.

Did the complete service and re-wrapped the bars as the cloth tape was also in tatters.

With the large "flipper" market here on the Cape there is also the possibilty that someone unknowingly picked up a decent older BMX,MTB bike, maybe at a yard sale or such! Bike gets a flat tire and is thrown in the corner for years! I do pest control, so, I may be the only person going into that cluttered basement or garage in a long time! I got the ZebraKenko yesterday. The steel wheels are surpisingly light. I dig the headtube badge. Unfortunately, these are the before cleanup pics - she looks 100% better already.

Flea Market find, this morning. 1983 GT BMX with ACS mag wheels, chrome, appears all original. and other than some roached front fork stickers, in very nice shape. $80.00 destined to be flipped to finance my bontrager BMX fetish, and classic road bike fetishhttp://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=262246http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=262247

Well that flipped nicely and quickly, sold within 45 minutes of being on craigslist.
