Picked up this 1985 Univega Specialissima yesterday. Original drive train long gone unfortunately. I enjoy rebuilding touring bikes from this era, this one will hit the parts bin hard. RSX on a mid 1980's touring bike? Uh, no thanks. I'll recycle those parts onto another project.

Well...I picked up a number of bikes in the last week...saving several from being thrown out...here you go with the entire "week haul"...

(1) Schwinn Suburban - good shape...will turn it into a rider for my mother-in-law when she visits...FREE! (dump)

(2) Schwinn Passage - small frame bike...will flip this one (paid $75)

(3) Miyata 310 - again, small frame bike...try to convince wifey to ride! (paid $100)

(4) Fuji Sport 12 - in VERY rough shape...paid $30 for it...simply to get the Suntour Bar Ends! There are a few other parts that will hit the parts bin...seat post is stuck, so, unfortunately, this frame probably ends up in the dump

(5) Schwinn Tempo - few pieces missing (saddle, brake calipers), but should contribute to parts bin with a 105 group...and, who knows, might rebuild and try it out! (paid $80)

(6) Italvega - in building up my Raleigh Professional and International, I need Campy DT Clamp On Shifters...this had a set...so I bought it for $50, just to get the shifters!

(7) Raleigh Grand Prix - bought to add to my collection of Raleighs (hey, @$80...why not?)

(8) Miyata Sport (no pictures) - bought it ($40) to fix up and flip...well...a woman spotted on my car rack at a grocery store stop...she wanted it...I said, ok, $60...she bought it then and there...I did not even get it home!

(9)Trek Frame (no pictures yet...will post in another thread after pictures...to try and help identify) - paid ZERO!http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360919http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360920http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360921http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360922http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360923http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360924http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360925

I take it that's the blue one with the black bands on the seat tube? What size is it? Got any plans for it beyond being a parts donor? If you don't and it's in decent shape, I might be talked into taking it off your hands. :)

You found a lot of stuff. That Tempo is a great bike.

<<<Is that a Touring model, it looks like one I own ( at least the same color & decals) and I would love to see some more pictures of it. I found mine in the trash almost 25yrs ago and stored it away in the attic of my shop. ( before I knew anything about Bianchi ) I am now slowly starting to work on it and gathering the last few parts I need.

Mine had Suntour V-Luxe GT derailleurs, SR Silstar Cranks, Mavic Mod E 700c wheelset & Dia-Compe side pull brakes. I plan on making it a upright lite tourer using Suntour XC components with 7spd Accushift Bar Cons. I already built up a new set of wheels for it, got a NOS XC Comp triple crank and derailleurs & a XC seat post. I haven't decided what brake set I am going to use yet but most likely a set of bronze colored Dia-Compes I have, I also picked up some new gold decals for it & a set of fenders.

Glenn>>>

Here are a few more pics of my Bianchi Limited.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360979http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360980http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360981http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360982http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=360984

There are other Bianchi gurus out there that know waaaaay more than I.
But here's what I've found, regarding the Japanese builds, based on the ones I've owned.

Japanese builds tend to have the 2nd letter of the serial # as an 'S'.
My Limited is AS11939
My Sport SS is LS329595
(Another is hanging in my garage, but its -2deg right now... and not inclined to take pics of it at the moment!) ;)

The Limited is 100% stock, and is a mid-level component build.
My Sport SS is an entry level build. Although it has a mix of Shimano 600 and RSX brifters... those were added by a previous owner.
The entry level builds had 27" rims and a flat kick stand plate welded by the BB between the chainstays.
Mid and upper build had a 'brace' instead.

Here's 2 pics of what I'm talking about:

picked up a Univega Gran Rally today.. thing looks like it's been ridden less than 1 mile... almost flawless except some scratches on the fork that look more like "shop wear". Original Univega branded tires are in great condition.. even the hoods look brand new :p I'll post more pics later

Tange db tubes, All Shimano 600 EX - 6207 down to the headset and BB

just wish it were in my size!

Same experience with the same bike. Beautiful ride, just too small. Made a nice chunk on a flip though.

Yeah, I knew before I bought it that it was way too small, but it wasn't until I actually saw it in person that I was sad it wasn't in my size.. maybe it's a good thing though.. I would be afraid to ride it! It's definitely wallhanger status

Found this stuff at a sale this weekend:

(Not pictured - bunch of Park, VAR, Hozan, and machinist hand tools)

NOS Deore XT 7 speed black 36h hubs, bottom bracket, chain, cassette, and Avocet 40 computer.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=361525

Mid 80s Bicycle Rider magazines, 1986 Performance catalog, 1981 Reynolds catalog and specs, The magazines have some interesting articles and ads.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=361526

I was most excited about the black XT hubs until I was digging through a box of books and found a 1989 Merlin catalog and 1991 Merlin spec sheet. Really stoked about finding the catalog to go with my Merlin).

Everything red on this bike, and a stem(not shown) for $13 at the flea market. It was crowded as hell, and I was on my way out, when I spotted a table of bike parts. These were the jewels in the pile. Dia Compe calipers, and Sugino Super Maxy BMX cranks, and a GT seatpost clamp. Not a bad score, and decent condition. It should get my odd CW beast back on the road, or trail.,,,,BD

Wow, that was a steal. Is that set up as a 64'er, or is the angle of the photo making it look like the front wheel is smaller?

Cool! I'm guessing these guys would love a scan of the spec sheet: http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/...in/Catalogues/

I love this thread! I have saved two bikes from trash piles many years ago, but have not started to work on them until recently. Will post pics when I can.

By the way, I'll also be happy to take any good steel bikes off of anyone's hands.. or trash piles. Forget the dump, keep them on the road!

That's the angle of the frame!? This is as far as I know, some custom or prototype. Super thin tubing, even the BB shell is thin. Campy drops welded to plates. No one else seems to know what it is, even a few vintage CW groups don't have a clue? It will only fit a 1.75 tire in the rear, and the original fork was missing. To answer your question, the top tube angles DOWN towards the front. Weirdest thing I've ever seen!,,,,BD

Here's a true side view... Weird eh?

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psbc1c32fd.jpg

Remnants of a VDC (Voris Dixon) sticker. I still have no clue if his shop built it, or someone acquired it and stuck it on. You can also see the thin walled BB shell.

Got this combo yesterday. I had a rough but complete Trek 220 on Craigs list. It was far to small for me but I was going to strip it and up=grade an old MB. Posted it for $80 until I got around to stripping it and a guy called to see if it would fit his Grand Daughter. Well he came out with this bike and carrier , looked at the trek and said, "I will trade the carrier and the bike for your Trek. I gulped and said---Yes and away he went with the Trek in his trunk. Some days are better than others, The Probe which I know all about is a 56CM and absolutely perfect with all the correct original parts except for a new set of tires. It will be a rider and will fit right in the rack between the Paramounts. How do you define semi abandoned?

That's a bar/saddle swap from being a really nice gravel grinder. I would drop bar that bike in a second. My red C'dale is becoming a touring too, if I can ever find the time to work on anything besides sleep, and laundry.,,,,BD

It looked as if the guy I bought it from was not really in to bicycles but more into flipping things he thinks he could turn a buck on. So I figured I saved it and gave it new life!
