I have a Ideale purchased in 1976 that has the same problem. I did not ride the bike for years (others have carried the load, so to speak) and it just got hard but otherwise is pristine.
There have been multiple tries at softening it up with both Ideale and Brooks saddle treatments but it is still too hard to ride on. I will follow your thread with much interest... |
What other saddles, may I ask?

Way back I bought a Batavus in Amsterdam to ride on a European tour and it had a cheap leather saddle on it, like a Wright's but I don't recall the name. I rode it daily for five months and it did break in but broke me in during the process. Some old Italian guy who'd raced decades before then suggested butter, so I bought some and would take saddle off every night, take it apart and work the leather. Also had to lace it to the saddle rails to keep it from abrading the insides of my thighs. Had a titanium Brooks Swift that broke in oddly and felt like if was collapsing under me but never did. Don't recall what happened to that; might have given it away. Have a B72 that I tried on my Raleigh Sports but I don't like the feel of it, feels like I'm riding on the cantle plate no matter how I adjust it and I have an Ideale #6 that is actually a ladies' saddle but the shape looks like it might work. It's on the Nishiki Cresta that I never ride. I had high hopes for a Brooks Team Pro but the bike it was on got stolen. There's a sprung Brooks Conquest on my Paramount that is fairly comfortable and a used B17 that I got off an old Raleigh Competition years ago that has been on several bikes and works okay but I'm not riding enough for my butt to be in shape to be comfy on any of them these days. But enough about me... |

The best was a Brooks Pro I bought specifically due to the narrow shape after trying an Avocet Touring II, and it broke in very nicely but eventually tore at the rivets. Still have the carcass. Also got a Fujita Pro warranty saddle that came off a Fuji America. That saddle had a flaw in the leather, a bump on the left side that I shaved down and which I used thereafter, but that one did not break in as nicely. Still have it hanging up.

All I can say is: OUCH! I recently finally bought a Brooks B17 which at 400 miles is still breaking in; thankfully, not so much me breaking in. I also have liked the Selle Royal Respiro Soft Athletic Bike Saddle which is comfortable but not like my old Ideale was. Always looking for a comfortable saddle that is good for day after day cycling moderate distances.

Great advice! Thanks

A lonely Viscount
With third generation aluminum fork tested 40 years by original owner whosse father insisted he trade in the bike with the first generation "death fork". Im going to force myself to part it out in case anyone wants viscount specific pieces

Possibly a bit boring, but I'll post it now, and pix later.
Found an old Rigida rear wheel in a bin in our back lane, and grabbed it for a look. Bit of a lipped rim on one side, and some bent spokes. Good news is there's a serviceable Regina (62.5) f/w on it, and a Campagnalo hub shell with the dust caps intact. I recognized the winged wheel on the outer hub shell right away. -D.S. |

Kind of a time capsule find today. Looks like 1987 all over again. At least that is the year I am finding. Lemond Team Lemond Comp with a full 600 Tri-Color group. Carnielli frame, Turbo saddle and Continental Giro sew ups.. Gotta love Scott aero bars with fluorescent green skull bar tape.

A buddy I trade with sent me a local free ad. Surprised I got them. Gifter said his phone was blowing up. I know I wasn't the first responder. Bianchi and Allez

Grabbed to rehab for a friend who needs a bike to ride with his son. Owner bought it at beginning of the pandemic and then let it sit (outside, I am assuming). He told me the tires were brand new when he got it (and never rode it) but they are likely not safe to ride from sun exposure.
Edit: not from the dump, I paid 35 paper dollars https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...609eae970e.jpg |
Neighbor is getting ready to move and starting the clearing process. Caught her just as she had wheeled this into the back alley.

A nice thrift store find today. I have to admit I have never seen this model. 1993 Raleigh CT400 touring bike. It has the Shimano 400CX group which I am not very familiar with either, but man it has some low gearing on that crank. Should be a fun project to go through and load up with panniers.

Nice find! I suspect it was built and marketed as a hybrid, and later converted to drops and barcons. Enjoy, once you lose that corncob on the back.

Grabbed this off of marketplace and will combine with parts from the curbfind Trek 3900 of the same vintage. Solid and workable find with minimal cash outlay IF I can work with what I have.

I'm unreasonably excited about this mangled 2000-ish Trek 2300 I've just picked up off of Craigslist for $80.

However, I'm not generally a fan of bike-cannibalism; I just don't like the idea of stealing parts off a running bike and leaving a bare frame. So! They are rare, but I love finding bikes that are beyond saving, whose parts can be picked without guilt. In this instance its a Trek 2300 from around the year 2000 that's been in a gnarly head-on crash, with a fairly pristine Ultegra 6500 groupset and red-annodized Rolf rear wheel. I'm not a massive fan of this groupset aesthetically, but I have it on a similar age Team Fuji and it seems to work well. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e9b5e69d23.jpg I have two vintage bikes that I may use these parts for: one of which is a late 70's Motobecane Grand Jubilee that I'm planning to resto-mod, and the other is an early 80's Pro-Miyata which is just a fixie at the moment. I may potentially use the entire Ultegra groupset on my Pro-Miyata, but I'm hoping to use mid-80s Dura-Ace instead. So likely, the Ultegra brakes will be fitted to my Pro-Miyata and everything else, including the rear wheel, will go to my Motobecane. This will leave the Moto requiring a front wheel, which unfortunately will be hard to find anything that matches the sweet red Rolf annodizing, as well as modern brakes that are nutted. Is anyone aware of anything like that, or any way to modify recessed brakes to nutted?? https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...293ed0e431.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ab1eba79e3.jpg |
