fixed up the fuji espee. nothing too special as ill just use it as a commuter until i can find something awesome. too bad my city isnt big on cycling.

auchen - The six ten is a sport class bike and is rather lightweight and yes... they are a fast.

The Miyata 615 is a touring bike... it has longer stays and is fitted with cantis and came stock with a touring triple and not a road double as the 610 was equipped.

With all that being said, I have seen 610's used for touring as they are very well made (what Miyata isn't ?) and can handle some good hard work.

That kinda makes sense because it sure feels like a sport bike... But I thought it was a touring bike, because it does not have a double road crank - rather it has a Sakae Custom Triple, and a longer cage rear Suntour V-GT-Luxe, and double eyelet front dropouts. Also I would not have thought that they would have been using canti's back around 1980.

It's pretty impressive though.

This circa 1979 Sekine is a garage sale find that I bought from the fellow who picked it up to flip. The condition is exceptional for a 30 year old bike. Almost no wear or rust but seven broken spokes on the rear wheel. It appears that the spokes on the rear wheel loosened shortly after it was purchased, and when the spokes broke the bike was put away in the back of the garage and forgotten.

seat tube and top tube 22" c-c
Chain stays 17 3/4"
Wheelbase 41 1/4"
Araya 27" alloy rims
Altus LT FD, RD & levers
Tourney long reach caliper brakes and crank set
SR alloy seatpost and stem
Sakea handlebars.

The frame has long point lugs and forged dropouts not the shorter pointed lugs and stamped dropouts found on lower grade Sekine bikes.
There is no tubing decal but the main tubes ring like chromoly not thud like hightensile when tapped.

Any suggestion as to what the model might be?

I am kinda used to it as my Lawnmower repair shop I had wasn't that big and I would have to store all my motorcycles and quads that were for sale in it when I was closed or when it rained,at least bicycles don't weigh as much.

I found one a few months ago and fixed it up for one of the students that works in my department. I thought it was a pretty darn nice bike. If I had yours, I would put a new set of Tektro aero brake levers on it and new tape.

This might be my best-ever find:
Shogun Alpine GT, found on Craigslist. A few low-quality cell-phone pics made it hard to tell what it was, but I could make out a triple crank, downtube shifters and no turkey levers, so I figured it was worth a look. What I got was a full-on vintage touring bike for $50!! Tange Infinity tubing with a Mangalloy fork, Shimano Deore shifting and canti brakes, Suzue sealed hubs and Arraya alloy 27" rims and a Sugino VP Cycloid crankset with 52/42/28 rings. Also a Cateye Micro with cadence, which has a dead battery, and a globby Spenco saddle cover over a nice Sella Italia (?) Anatomic suede saddle.
My jaw almost dropped when I saw it, but I kept my poker face on. The guy selling it said he bought it a few weeks ago, but "it was too small". I'm guessing he bought it from the original owner who had it hanging in the garage for 20 years. No rust, no scratches. Shimano date code indicates it's a 1988 model. Pics to follow.

What a PITA, needing to load and unload to work, better use of a garage though then car storage.

A subdivision near my house was having a bunch of garage/yard sales so I thought I better check it out. The first house I stopped had this laying in their front yard, drive side down.

It is a Volkscycle Mark XV.

As the only other VC bikes I had run across in the past were low end models, I didn't have much hope of anything nicer. As I stood it up to check it out, I spotted Shimano 600 Arabesque shifters.

With further checking, I discovered the matching deraileurs and crankset. The brakes are 600 non Arabesque. The date code on the back of a crankarm indicates it is from February 1981.

I picked up this 1953 Schwinn Racer from the side of the road. It looks to be in really nice condition but in need of new wheels/tires. Anyone want to come to my house and have it?

It's pretty impressive though.
The 610 is classified as a tourer and earlier models had side pulls instead of cantis so think the bike evolved a little over the years... a friend has an early 610 with side pulls and a road triple and it really comes across as a sport class or randonneuring bike. Some early Treks touring bikes were also fitted with side pulls and moved to using cantis and that always throws me off.

Some would say the 610 is a better tourer than the 1000 because it has a stiffer frame which also gives the bike a sportier feel... and the first time I looked at your bike I thought it was running a double and not a half step.

On the topic of randonneuring and Miyatas.. a fellow came into the shop with an 85 or 86 Koga Miyata Randonneur in absolutely mint condition and it was fitted with first generation Shimano Deore (Stag's Head) with the matching cantis, had custom racks, Sanyo generator and light, and a 600 crank and shifters.

It was freaking beautiful and was a 52 cm frame and the fellow said his wife has a matching bike that she no longer rides and was thinking of selling it... he left before I could snap a picture.

I told him he had a very desirable and valuable pair of bikes and he said he paid 4000.00 for the pair when they were new... he had no idea that these were such a sought after bike.

My catches of the day were; a Shimano 600 front brake to match my orphaned rear brake and this completes an Arabesque group I have, found a Cyclo 5 speed block in as 13-21 that I will use on a geared wheel for my fixed gear folder, and found some very nice Serfas front pannier bags in great condition that I can use on my low rider rack or put on my daughter's bikes when we do shopping.

Picked up this NOS Suntour freewheel the other day from the LBS for $10.75



Oh and they also threw in this Suntour Superbe hub for free...



Gotta love bike shops that only care about what's new and hot and don't care about all that "old crap"

Scored my first Univega. Looks to be a 86 Viva Sport with Cyclone derailleurs, Diacompe brakes and Ukai 700 rims that I may well keep for the Lotus. Tires still have the mold flaps down the center of the tire but I am not convinced they are original. Once I get the dirt off it we will see if it was a low mile garage queen or it just had new tires put on it just before being forgotten about in the garage. The sad part is the last 24 hours is when the paint suffered the most damage. no dents just a bunch of fresh scrapes. It got beat around a lot between the garage it lived and the thrift store I found it at.
Too big for the wife and to small for me so it will be a catch and release.


I also finished the clean up of the 87 Panasonic PT3500 MAN I wish it was a 60cm and I would hold on it for a while. Sweet riding bike. I really dig the half step set up and if I had something I could swap it out with before it finds a new home I would. Just wish it had not been left out or stored in such a humid environment. I had to apply some Alabama chrome to some of the bright bits. Great rider but cosmetically challenged. It will be a good commuter for somebody.

That doesn't look too far from 60cm, is it a 58? I sympathize with your size situation, I wish my PT3500 was a 54cm rather than a 58, it's a lovely and practical bike.

Great score on the Shogun, BluesDaddy! I recently bought a bike with the same horrid Spenco gel pad on it, I hoped it would fall off while traveling home on my rear rack on the highway, but no such luck. Instead, I hit a storm and it soaked up a gallon of water and got twice as nasty.
