I would recommend somehow attaching the new brake cable to the old before pulling it out. The frame may (but probably won't) have an internal guide making the job a no-brainer. If it doesn't, it may be very difficult getting the new cable lined up to fall out of the hole at the other end.

Having replaced a few rear derailleur cables on the old Treks that ran the cable through the chainstay, I can vouch for the unpleasantness of this job.

what I do is remove the inner cable and insert a new inner into the old outer. Even if it goes in just a little bit. then drag out the old outer cable, making sure the inner stays inside. Then when the outers removed you can measure the outer against it. Then slide the outer on to the inner wire

A lot of times you can pull the seat post out and get a finger into the top tube to push the cable into the exit hole.

Ok, thanks for all the help guys. The frame has no internal routing but by using the finger through seat tube into top tube trick I was able to get the cable out the exit hole and then pull the new housing through with no issues. Now to finish the rest of the overhaul so I can ride this beaut before it starts pouring rain for the next 6 months!

This one was a little rougher than my Superbe, but it cleaned up well nonetheless. My daughter (19) thinks it's "awesome" and is "really jealous" that I got it for Mom rather than her.

It sat under the seller's porch for some time so there's a good amount of rust; definitely will need a full overhaul and Framesaver. I'll stick with the red+white color scheme but that polka-dot bar tape has to go!

Sandusky, OH.... thats a bit of a drive for me (1.5 hours). The guy who sold it was nice, he bartered with me... then gave me a gas money discount... then bought me dinner. Truly one of the best craigslist experiences to date.

It seems pretty nice, I enjoyed the short ride I took on it. Now I have to pick which I want more.. the club fuji or the Raleigh.

The Raleigh Gran Sport was my first nice bike. I rather regret selling it. That was many years ago. Mine was a 1976 model. I think yours is a year or two older.

Mine has stamped drop-outs, that was a bit disappointing. The fork crown looks similar to the Nervex ones I have seen, the rest look like Bocamas. I was estimating 1973 but the serial number is not helping. I assume the suntour parts are replacements although the seller swears it's all original.

Right, it had stamped dropouts. The other disappointment with the frame is the super-long-reach brakes. Hard to remedy that, and it limits the performance of the brakes.

You're right that the Suntour derailleurs are not original. It came with Simplex. The bike also came with a B17 saddle. So be grateful for the upgrades.

Let me know how it rides. It's been too long for me to remember. I currently ride a 1971 Raleigh Super Course and enjoy it very much. I wonder if the geometry is the same. The Gran Sport has a better tubeset.

Yeah, the suntour bits and Brooks Pro put a smile on my face. So far, in my limited time on the bike it feels like it flexes more than my Raleigh Pro. When I really cranked on it I could get the chain to rub the FD I assume from the frame flexing.

I expected it to feel sluggish, especially with the knobby Kenda tires but I was pleasantly surprised. It seems to be much livelier than the quad butted Fuji Club. Again, that is only a first impression of both bikes. The Fuji had some 20mm tires mounted too.

That is sweet... the GS is a beautiful riding bike and the Carlton forks are wondrous.

The Suntour parts are an upgrade over the Simplex it would have come with and think you are right with your dating as a pre '73 would have had a scripted Raleigh logo.

They sold for $300.00 back then which was a pretty fair chunk of change and you should not worry about the dropouts... it's a really well built bike.

Mine looks nothing like it did back in 1973...

That original price tag is shocking. I agree about the fork, and it's pretty to boot.

What diameter should the seat post be, 27.2? Someone shoved the wrong size in and the seat cluster looks pinched, it affected the roundness of the seat tube as well .

The next steps up from the Gran Sport would have put you on a Professional or Competition... and it is a very light frame and fork which is indeed, very responsive.

My Gran Sports has lived life as both a fixed gear and geared road bike and with the decals being in such shabby shape I opted to get creative when I turned it back into a fixed gear bike.

In either form it has been an excellent ride in every way.

I found mine at a second hand store for $10.00...it had it's original stem, bars, and Carlton levers (also lovely) but the other parts were cheap replacements.

How she looked a year or so ago... I had her built up with a Shimano 600 Arabesque group.
