There should be a date code on the rear axle allowing a pretty accurate date of manufacture for the bike. I would say from the ammount of BSA logo'd parts that you bike is pre 1957 when Raleigh took them over, I would have thought that a bike of that vintage would also have a BSA chainring perhaps that has been changed out at sometime in the past, the gear change lever with the little indicator window is also a period feature.... A lovely bike.

its from between '53-'56, judging by the SA gears . . but you're right about the chainring, though i have seen those style ones before, i might try and find an original BSA set.


Re the serial number, it was on the top of the seat tube, to the side: N42759, can't find how to date from that though.

thanks again for your help - i've got it working, and is great fun to ride.
