Quick ? about cable clamps
 

When installing cable clamps and stops, do you guys put anything in between the clamp and the frame? Like grease to prevent rust, or am I thinking too much? Thanks

Maybe not a bad idea. I've seen plenty of old bikes which had the finish damaged from rusting clips eventually wearing into the enamel. Perhaps even a very thin strip of rubber - like cut from a ultra-thin discarded inner tube?

+1 Rubber from an inner tube is a good idea.

i would suggest something very very thin as in a small strip of vinyl tape .use a utility knide to make "precision masterful cuts" <---LOL

exactly right. Plastic electicians tape, trimmed so as to not show (trim before installing on the bike, of course). I've tried inner tube, but could not get the clamp screw to thread down.

I've used a thin sheet of acetate (it was originally used as packing material used to protect the front surface of an LCD monitor.) It's invisible when trimmed to shape, leaves no sticky residue, and a bit tougher than electrical tape. Just another option...

Brush Plasti Dip on the inner surface of the clamp and let it dry.

You could use that plummer's teflon tape.
I'd never thought about it really but I hate putting those things.

Got it. I ended up using black electrical tape. It is sticky so it makes installation a lot easier.

I hope you stuck the electrical tape on the inside of the cable clamps and not on the frame! :twitchy:

Worst I've ever seen was a Witcomb that had everything - FD, clips, you name it - clamped over two wrappings of black cotton bar tape. Yech.

Huh! you mean the tape suppose to stick to the inside of the clamps. I just wrapped the tape over the clamps, so I didn't even have to use the nuts and bolts. Man, and I thought that was too easy.:p Yeah, the tape was stuck to the clamps.

Don't knock the bar tape. The LBS that sold me my Peugeot in '87 installed a Pletscher rack on it. They put a wrap of cotton rim tape around the seat stays before they clamped on the rack. They also added a metal spacer strip from the clamp nut to the brake bolt so the clamp wouldn't slide up and down the stays.

Last week when finally I removed the rack after 21 years of use, the cotton tape had become black and stiff. But the seat stays were intact. Good installation job!

So I used bar tape under the clamps when I installed a clamp-on bottle cage on a '74 Raleigh Gran Prix that I'm fixing up with my son. We picked a color to match the frame. Looks good (at least for now) and does the job. But I suppose rubber would last longer.

Nice bike! Silver fenders, of course.
